JUMPS SEASONS STEPS UP A GEAR: With the JNwine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal this afternoon. SHAMROCK looks at the race and his nap also runs on the Down Royal card.

A very select seven strong field go to post for the JNwine.com Champion Chase (Grade 1) at Down Royal this afternoon including the last two winners of the race, Quito De La Roque in 2011 and Kauto Stone who won it last year.

First Lieutenant was runner-up last season with Quito De La Roque third and he might be the one for this year’s renewal.

He only has a length to find with Kauto Stone on last season’s race and already has a pipe-opener under his belt. He was third to Toner D’Oudairies at Punchestown which should have blown the cobwebs away.

It’s impossible to be confident in any way about Kauto Stone in any way. He was pulled up in two of three subsequent starts since winning this and whilst he is likely to be a fresh horse after the near 200 day break, Paul Nicholls’ horses have generally needed the run so far this season.

The admirable Sizing Europe won well on his reappearance at Gowran Park but has come up short in this race in the past.

The nap for me today is Gitane Du Berlais in the opener. He is a winner in France over hurdles and now with the Willie Mullins yard.

This should be a straight forward introduction.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP Gitane Du Berlais (12.45 Down Royal)
