SHAMROCK GRAND NATIONAL DAY VERDICT: Irish winner in the Grand National at Aintree this afternoon? Possibly, but Trifolium looks best bet for the Irish runners in the 2.05 after his excellent third in the Arkle.
The Grand National in a moment but first up my main bet of the day is on Trifolium in the Doom Bar Maghull Novices’ Chase at 2.05.
The Charles Byrnes trained runner was sent off joint favourite with Champagne Fever for the Arkle at Cheltenham last month but in the end both had to settle for places behind the shock winner Western Warhorse.
I prefer him to the Paul Nicholls trained Hinterland. Rightly or wrongly I’m still not convinced about the form of the Nicholls yard despite Silviniaco Conti winning earlier in the week. He’s had 18 runners since then and they’ve all been turned over.
Henry De Bromhead won this last year with 28/1 chance Special Tiara and saddles another big priced runner in Moscow Mannon this time who was a little disappointing when a beaten favourite at evens at Leopardstown last time out and clearly this is much tougher.
The Irish challenge is completed by Ted Veale who was beaten when falling in the Arkle and has become frustrating.
In the Grand National we’re due an Irish trained winner – last one being Silver Birch in 2007 – but the problem is trying to figure out which one as there is nothing with a leading chance.
I’m wondering whether my old friend Big Shu might be the one ?
I like his profile in terms of the big race, nine-year-old coming into the race in good form and although having his first spin around Aintree is a specialist in the ‘quirky’ race division – relishing the cross country challenges.
Don’t worry about stamina. He’s got it in spades. He won the La Touche Cup at Punchestown over 4m 1f in heavy ground !!
