IRISH CHAMPION STAKES DAY: SHAMROCK looks ahead to the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes – the 4.15 at Leopardstown this afternoon.
A cracking Irish Champion Stakes card at Leopardstown this afternoon and the feature looks very open, despite perhaps not having the class of recent renewals.
It still makes for a fascinating betting heat – especially with the strong English challenge from Roger Charlton and Mark Johnston who seek to plunder the €712,500 first prize.
At the top of the market is the Aidan O’Brien trained Magical who finally doesn’t have Enable to worry about and would be a very worthy winner of this Group 1.
She’s been beaten into second twice by Enable, at Sandown in the Coral-Eclipse and then in the Yorkshire Oaks but was by no means disgraced on either occasion and the superlatives are running out for Enable.
She won three on the bounce over this trip earlier in the season and should be able to resume winning ways.
Headman remains progressive and narrowly won a Group 2 at Saint-Cloud last time out on very soft ground. He handled good ground when winning the London Gold Cup Handicap at Newbury but this is a big hike up the class ladder for him and he will need to improve further – as opposed to Magical who really just needs to run her race.
The biggest danger looks to be Elarqam who ran a cracker when third to Japan in the Juddmonte International at York.
