3/1 WINNING NAP: SHAMROCK had one bet on Friday – his NAP DON COSSACK WHO WON THE MELLING CHASE at 3/1. Now for Grand National Saturday.
Ireland last won the Grand National in 2007 with Silver Birch, trained by Gordon Elliott and the trainer has credible win and place chances this year with Cause Of Causes.
It’s an incredibly wide open renewal this year (even by Grand National standards) and Cause Of Causes proved his current well being with a success over four miles at the Cheltenham Festival where he won the Toby Balding National Hunt Chase for amateur riders. Paul Carberry takes over from Jamie Codd in the saddle today. Stamina is guaranteed – we will find out today if he takes to the fences.
First Lieutenant for Mouse Morris might well be best of the other Irish challengers. He has won on the Mildmay track here and wouldn’t be the first horse to be rejuvenated for a spin around the National course.
You can argue that Lord Windermere is the class horse of the race – former winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup but he put in a sulky performance in his defence of the title this year and it’s hard to argue a case based on that run.
I’ve often opposed Willie Mullins to my eventual cost but it’s really hard to see Ballycasey being up to winning a National. His form seems to have petered out and he’s a doubtful stayer over three miles let alone four and a half !!!
I’m playing safer with the nap. The Dermot Weld trained Edelpour in the 4.40 at Gowran Park to build on a promising debut at Leopardstown last season. Weld has several strong chances on today’s card.
SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Edelpour (4.40 Gowran Park)
Grand National: (win and place) CAUSE OF CAUSES (4.15 Aintree)
