LEOPARDSTOWN STARTS HERE: Four brilliant days of Festive racing gets underway at Leopardstown this afternoon and SHAMROCK looks at the two Graded races on the card. Unfortunately Limerick has been called off today.
The big card at Leopardstown goes ahead this afternoon on testing ground but the meeting at Limerick has been abandoned due to a waterlogged track. The course have also announced that they will inspect at 8am tomorrow ahead of thir meeting on Sunday.
The featured Shannon Airport Novice Steeplechase, a Grade Two, has transferred to Sunday’s meeting to form an eight-race card.
The Grade 1 Racing Post Novice Chase is the highlight at Leopardstown where the ground changed to heavy this morning.
Just four runners line up for the feature but it promises to be an informative event with the unbeaten Douvan having his second start over fences. Winner of the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and following up at cramped odds in the Herald Champion Novice Hurdle at Punchestown, Douvan made all the running to make a winning start over fences at Navan – he jumped well bar a slight error at the last and was never troubled beating Rogue Trader by nine and a half lengths. This is much tougher opposition but he oozes class and can cement his place at the top of the Arkle betting today.
Main danger for me is Sizing John who is two from two over fences but has plenty to find with Douvan on hurdling form.
The Knight Frank Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 2) at 1.20 looks more competitive and Rashaan may be able to continue his excellent run of form. He was impressive when winning a Grade 3 at Fairyhouse last time out and can continue the progression.
SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Rashaan (1.20 Leopardstown)
NEXT BEST: Douvan (2.55 Leopardstown)
