MULLINS BIG GUNS AT ASCOT: A big day for Willie Mullins as he unleashes two of his biggest guns across the Irish Sea at Ascot.
The Willie Mullins big race Ascot double is around 2.74 on BETDAQ MULTIPLES and that’s a bet I’m struggling to get away from.
1:50 OLBG.com Mares’ Hurdle (Grade 2) (Registered As The Warfield Mares’ Hurdle) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m 7f 118y, 10 runners)
Vroum Vroum Mag (DAQMAN’s gold banker) runs here for Mullins and she bids to extend her unbeaten sequence to eight since joining the stable from France. She’s been winning Grade 2’s and 3’s over hurdles and fences for fun and we still have no real idea about how good she is or whether, long term, she is going to be better over hurdles or fences. This will be her longest trip to date but I can’t put that up as a negative as she has been staying on strongly over shorter trips. The testing ground equally will be the same as she has almost exclusively raced on. This race looks more competitive than is usual in this division of race but she does really look a standout and main danger (on the betting) Desert Queen (bidding to give Harry Fry a third consecutive win in the race) hasn’t even been tried yet at Graded level.
3:00 Sodexo Clarence House Chase (Grade 1) (5yo+, Class 1, 2m 192y, 5 runners)
The odds are a little insulting to Sire De Grugy here – he is a past winner of the race, officially rated the best horse in the race and, at the age of 10, is racing with renewed enthusiasm. Trading around 4 on BETDAQ in a race that looks a match will be hard for some punters to resist. Standing in his way though is Un De Sceaux who, like Vroum Vroum Mag earlier, is still hard to gauge on just how good he is. We know he is very good. His six length win in the Arkle last year told us that, but he has yet to be put under any pressure since switching from hurdles where he had an unbeaten record. The doubt would have to be his jumping. He fell on his chasing debut (at 1/8) but more worryingly came to grief at Leopardstown last time out when in command in a Grade 1. I think he’ll do it today – but fasten your seatbelts for the ride.
