VERRAZANO CARRIES IRISH HOPES IN LOCKINGE: Aidan O’Brien runs the ex-USA trained Verrazano in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury this afternoon. His NAP runs at Punchestown.

A big day for Aidan O’Brien at Newbury as he saddles Verrazano in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes.

This is his first run on this side of the Atlantic having previously been trained in the States by the great Todd Pletcher.

Verrazano was a leading three-year-old in the USA last year winning two Grade Ones over nine furlongs on dirt.

O’Brien said: “Obviously he knows all about the dirt. Hopefully it will be exciting what he can do and we can get the fast ground on grass for him.

“He has a lovely laid-back way of racing which should be a help. He could be a horse on fast ground you could relax in there.”

In terms of a bet today it would be real guesswork. He has 8lb to find on hot favourite Olympic Glory based on official ratings, but it’s not always easy to get them acccurate given the totally different racing backgrounds of the pair.

In the opener at Punchestown the Jessie Harrington trained High Stratos can make a winning jumps debut after impressing when winning a flat race at the Festival here.
