SATURDAY AT WEXFORD: SHAMROCK heads to Wexford on Saturday afternoon and also looks at the chances of Trading Leather in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.

Such a shame about St Nicholas Abbey.

We should have been discussing his chances in the King George today, and they were considerable, but the colt suffered a life-threatening fractured pastern on Monday while preparing for today’s race and underwent a major procedure at John Halley’s Fethard Equine Hospital.

Updates on his condition had been positive until yesterday afternoon when Coolmore revealed the six-year-old had suffered with bad colic during Thursday night.

Fingers crossed he makes a full recovery and goes on to have a successful stud career and long retirement.

Ireland’s chances in the King George now rest solely with Trading Leather for Jim Bolger. The three-year-old arrives in great form having won the Irish Derby but the evidence,  so far at least, is that it is not even an average bunch of three-year-olds this season and he may prove vulnerable against the older horses, notably of course the favourite Cirrus Des Aigles.

At Wexford this afternoon Papaya is the nap in the 3.25. I wouldn’t have napped her if Jim Bolger’s Manalisa was in the field but this was has now been withdrawn and Papaya can improve on her Limerick third last time out.
