HAPPILY EVER AFTER: SHAMROCK predicts a Guineas double for Aidan O’Brien at Newmarket this afternoon.
Not the best day for me yesterday. The nap, Agent Zigzag, was beaten a neck at 5/2 in the final race at Cork and I went for the ‘wrong’ one in the 2,000 Guineas favouring Gustav Kilmt over Aidan O’Brien’s other runner Saxon Warrior.
One headline today screamed: “Mendelssohn was a huge disappointment in the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby with Justify powering to victory.”
I’m not sure that’s totally fair. Watch the the start, Mendelssohn lost all chance within the first 10 seconds when he was bumped left, right and centre. Forget the race from a form perspective but don’t forget Mendelssohn just yet.
Ryan Moore jets back in time for the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket where hopefully he will get more luck on Happily.
There’s plenty of confidence behind Aidan O’Brien’s runner with the drying ground thought to be an added positive. She relished the good ground at Leopardstown last season when winning the Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes by five lengths.
She went on to win two Group 1 races on softer ground and is clearly out of the top drawer and should relish the step up to a mile.
SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Happily (3.35 Newmarket)
