AFTER YOU SIR, NO AFTER YOU: SHAMROCK looks ahead to the big races on Sunday including the John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase which is down to just three runners following the defection yesterday of last year’s winner Flemenstar.
On what turned out to be another superb day for Willie Mullins both sides of the Irish Sea, my nap, Vautour, came home with the minimum of fuss in the opener at Navan. The 1/2 SP was much shorter than he was trading at on BETDAQ at the time of selection but there were few worries in the race.
Sadly, for the second day running, we have lost a key participant in the feature race of the day. Sprinter Sacre’s withdrawl from the Tingle Creek at Sandown yesterday took the shine off that contest and at Punchestown today Flemenstar, last year’s winner, was taken out of the John Durkan Memorial yesterday.
Owner Stephen Curran said: “He’s got a bit of a knock, I’d say he knocked into himself.
“We don’t know how bad it is, we thought he would be OK but he’s too good a horse to be taking a chance with.”
That leaves a field of just three – and another Willie Mullins domination….
PUNCHESTOWN 1.35 John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase (Grade 1) 2m 4f
It’s not a huge betting race for me now, but Sir Des Champs looks too big in the market at 2.93 against stablemate Arvika Legeonniere at around 1.56 on BETDAQ.
There is, in the context of the race, a massive 12lb between them on official ratings in favour of Sir Des Champs who was second to Flemenstar in this last year.
The reason for the price differential is the expectation that he will need the race much more so than Arvika Legeonniere who has the benefit of a recent winning run at Clonmel where, generally, he did well apart from a couple of sloppy jumps.
It’s about the price, as always, and I’ll take my chances with Sir Des Champs.
CORK 2.20 Kerry Group Hilly Way Chase (Grade 2) 2m
This should be another for the Mullins team. Twinlight was very impressive in winning a Grade 3 Chase at Naas last time out and can step up a grade to win this. He’s 5 from 8 over chases so far.
SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Twinlight (2.20 Cork)
NEXT BEST: Sir Des Champs (1.35 Punchestown)
