WELCOME BACK: Faugheen makes his seasonal reappearance in the Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown this afternoon as he bids go go 11/11.
It’s 10/10 for Faugheen so far and that run will surely be extended this afternoon in the Grade 1 Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown.
If layers are looking for a glimmer of light in trying to get the reigning Champion Hurdler beaten, they might grasp the straw of Willie Mullins not being in the super-human form we have been accustomed to. All three of his horses that went off odds on yesterday were beaten (as I found out to my cost when the nap Beau Mome ran poorly).
But such is the superiority of Faugheen (as the BETDAQ odds of 1.21 tell you) that even a slightly below par performance wouldn’t stop him winning. He has 19lb in hand on official ratings over his nearest rival – Nichols Canyon who is also trained by Mullins and, if the ratings are to be believed, Mullins will have the 1-2-3 with Wicklow Brave in bronze.
Ahead of the big race there are two good quality Sunday starters:
1:05 Ryans Cleaning Craddockstown Novice Chase (Grade 2) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m, 4 runners)
Sizing John should continue his progress over fences. He had an easy task over course and distance last time out in the Download The Betdaq App Beginners Chase and won his chasing debut with ease. He has plenty of class over hurdles including a Grade 1 victory at Leopardstown and is versatile ground wise.
1:40 Florida Pearl Novice Chase (Grade 2) (5yo+, Class 1, 2m 6f, 6 runners)
This looks a competitive renewal and narrow preference goes to Wrath Of Titans who is the choice of Bryan Cooper over the two other Gigginstown owned runners in the race. He travelled really well on his chasing debut at Fairyhouse and landed the odds in style. Killer Miller also made an impressive chasing debut at Naas and looks a big danger.
