FILLIES TAKE CENTRE STAGE: All eyes on the fillies this afternoon with the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas at The Curragh.
The 1,000 Guineas can often throw up a surprise winner – including 12 months ago when Alpha Centauri popped up at 12/1.
This year’s renewal has quite an open look to it and although Aidan O’Brien trains four of the 10 declared runners there is no hot pot in the race.
It may pay to take a speculative punt on the Kevin Ryan trained raider East who is one of the least exposed runners and having just her fifth start.
She ran an incredible race to finish second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Churchill Downs last November and ran a very satisfactory seasonal debut when third in a Group 1 at Longchamp where the ground was bottomless.
The slight concern maybe the ground might be too quick for her – but it was good at Churchill Downs and I’m happy to give her the benefit of the doubt at an each-way price.
Hermosa bids for the Guineas double – she made all to win at Newmarket (Qabala third) but might not be able to dominate this race to the same effect.
