TRIPLE GRADE 1 ACTION: SHAMROCK previews all three of the Grade 1 races on the superb Fairyhouse card on Sunday.
A stunning days racing to look forward to at Fairyhouse this afternoon with three Grade 1 races on the card:
1:10 Bar One Racing Royal Bond Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m, 5 runners)
Nichols Vanyon won this last year for Willie Mullins and the trainer has a powerful duo at the head of today’s market in the prolific winners Long Dog and Bachasson. Interestingly, Long Dog’s only career defeat came here on his debut over hurdles but since then he has taken four relatively minor races with ease. However, in those, he has gone off at 2/7, 1/2, 1/6 and 1/7 so it’s still hard to gauge how good he is in Grade 1 context (although he won a Grade 3 last time). Ruby Walsh rides which is perhaps the biggest pointer of all. However, I prefer the chances of stablemate Bachasson who is unbeaten in four starts and also proved himself at a higher level when winning a Grade 3 at Tipperary last time out. I can’t really find much between them and, as always in this situations, would rather be on the one at better odds.
1:40 Bar One Racing Hatton’s Grace Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f, 7 runners)
The race has attracted a couple more runners than of recent years but the ratings point clearly towards Arctic Fire. He wasn’t entirely convincing when winning the Grade 2 Lismullen Hurdle last time out – but it was a muddling race and he should be much stronger today with that seasonal reappearance behind him. He’s often been the bridesmaid – chasing home some illustrious stable companions including Hurricane Fly and Faugheen but is undoubtedly very close to the top himself.
2:40 Bar One Racing Drinmore Novice Chase (Grade 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f, 8 runners)
SHOCK: A Grade 1 that WIllie Mullins might not win today. Preference is for the Gordon Elliott trained Free Expression who ran well behind Outlander (Mullins) at Punchestown last time out and I fancy him to turn that form around today. He was impeded before the straight which could easily have made the difference in the one and a half length beating.
