AFTER A 40/1 2000 GUINEAS WINNER SHAMROCK ASKS: ‘WHAT’S NEXT?’ It was a day of shocks all over yesterday, not least of which in the 2000 Guineas with the success of Night Of Thunder.

It’s always easy this racing game – when you know the results.

And before I get accused of after-timing let me plead my case. Whilst no one likes to hear anyone (especially a tipster) mouth off after a race about X,Y,Z there is a case for ‘after studying’ rather than ‘after timing’. It’s all part of learning the game, adjusting and making you a better punter for the battles ahead.

So, with this in mind (and in the safe knowledge that I didn’t make a bean from the 2000 Guineas) I simply pose one question. How was Night Of Thunder allowed to go off at 40/1 (bigger on BETDAQ)? If you were of the belief (and not all were) that Kingman was a worthy favourite at 6/4 then on that basis Night Of Thunder could only be priced at, say 12/1 at best to turn around the Greenham form. If Night Of Thunder had come from a smaller stable then perhaps it was understandable but this was Team Hannon.

My other lesson (which did come at a price to me) was to get back onboard with Aidan O’Brien. I’ve opposed him in the last few weeks and the policy has generally been profitable but it looks as though the corner has been turned and Australia ran a cracker.

In the 1000 Guineas today, O’Brien runs two – both with solid claims. If the ground had come up softer then I would have preferred Bracelet who proved an exception to the poor start of the season for the stable when she won the Leopardstown 1000 Guineas Trial but it was soft to heavy that day and I’m nervous about her chances on this quicker ground.

Tapestry does have the proven form on the ground and is preferred. She finished third (placed second) in a messy finish to the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh in her final start of last season. Rizeena won that by a head but I wouldn’t be surprised to see that form turned around.

I’m back Aidan. All is forgiven.
