LAYING THOUSAND STARS: He is overdue a win and takes a big drop in class at Leopardstown this afternoon but is he on the downgrade ?

With just over a week to go until you know what, Willie Mullins is certainly showing no let up in his domination of the Irish racing scene.

Takes this afternoons Ballsbridge Hurdle at Leopardstown for example. Mullins has the first and second favourites and there are only six runners.

The favourite is Thousand Stars and the good news for him is that his stable companion isn’t Hurricane Fly this time. He’s often been used as a pacemaker to the Fly including last time out in the Ryanair Hurdle here where he dropped to last of the five runners before two out.

He’s well in on official ratings but arguably also on the downgrade and this race has thrown up the odd surprise winner in recent seasons and he faces some younger in form rivals.

Thousand Stars has had some tough races at the highest level and this will no doubt be seen as a confidence boosting opportunity but for the second time this week I’m pressing the lay button on a Willie Mullins trained runner. It worked with Urano earlier in the week !!
