O’BRIEN SEEKS FURTHER CLASSIC GLORY: 24 hours after landing his seventh 2000 Guineas, trainer Aidan O’Brien is back for more at Newmarket on Sunday.

Gleneagles won the 2000 Guineas in the style of a very good horse but unfortunately for me I was on Ol’ Man River who finished tailed off.

O’Brien bids for a Guineas double with Qualify on Sunday in the 1000 Guineas. She was last seen when unplaced in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita. She had her limitations exposed at Group 1 and 2 level last season and would have to have improved to figure here.

Ryan Moore has better chances of the Guineas double – he is onboard Legatissimo who impressed when winning a Listed contest at Gowran Park and again gets the fast ground she prefers.

However, a bigger Irish challenger and my selection for the race is the Jim Bolger trained Lucida. She is another who should relish the faster ground and went within a neck of winning the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh last season on fast ground.

She was sent off a warm favourite for the Dubai Fillies’ Mile over course and distance in October but could only finish fifth of seven, however that run came on soft ground and she should bounce off this firmer surface better. She holds several of these on form and collateral form and will hopefully follow in the footsteps of Finsceal Beo who won this for Bolger and Manning in 2007.
