NAAS LISTED CHASE: Willie Mullins has the favourite for this afternoon’s big race but she has been beaten at 5/4, 11/4, 8/11, 1/2 and 6/4 in her last five starts.
Really poor tipping day for me yesterday which got off to a horror start with a wretched run from the nap Ivanovich Gorbatov in the opener and then the next best Tombstone seemed to do everything right bar win the race. It was no surprise to see him trading at around 1.12 in-play on BETDAQ.
It was a Grade 1 hat-trick for Willie Mullins – the hard way – with his lesser fancied runners stepping up in style. It should of course been a clean sweep but for Ruby Walsh coming to grief onboard Valseur Lido at the last in the Irish Gold Cup which left the path clear for Carlingford Lough to win the race for a second year running.
There’s a Listed race at Naas this afternoon – the BBA Ireland Limited Opera Hat Mares Chase at 2.20pm which has disappointingly attracted just four runners. Gitane Du Berlais had her day in the sun last year winning, yesterday’s feature, the Scilly Isles Novices Chase at Sandown Park but has struggled to recapture her best form since and has been beaten at 5/4, 11/4, 8/11, 1/2 and 6/4 since a win at Auteuil over hurdles.
It’s hard to say what the problem is. It’s not going related as she has won in testing conditions plenty times before but she just doesn’t seem to be seeing out her races. The drop back to the minimum might help on that front.
She’s penalised here and I have to look elsewhere at the prices. Carrigmoorna Rock hasn’t achieved anything like what the favourite has overall – but there is less of a question mark about her current temperament and she made a pleasing winning chasing debut at Thurles. She is a Grade 3 winner over hurdles and in receipt of weight from Gitane Du Berlais can cause a minor shock. She’s 3.3 versus 1.81 Gitane on BETDAQ at the time of writing.
If it goes wrong I’ll have just got Willie Mullins wrong again, like yesterday 🙁
