IRISH CHAMPIONS WEEKEND DAY 2: SHAMROCK now looks at the big races on the Curragh card on the second of the Irish Champions weekend.
It was great racing at Leopardstown yesterday but I couldn’t have got it more wrong on the tipping front 🙁
Anyway, on to St Leger Day at the Curragh, the big race is one of five Group races on the card:
2:40 Moyglare ‘Jewels’ Blandford Stakes (Fillies’ Group 2) (3yo+, Class 1, 1m 2f, 7 runners)
Even allowing for the impressive win of John F Kennedy at Leopardstown yesterday it went down as a bad day at the office for Aidan O’Brien with the shock defeat of stable star Australia in the Irish Champion Stakes. He runs three here including Chicquita who hasn’t been seen since winning the Irish Oaks here last July. It’s a big ask for her to win this first time back and preference has to be for the race fit Tarfasha who was runner-up to Taghrooda in the Epsom Oaks.
3:10 Derrinstown Stud Flying Five Stakes (Group 3) (3yo+, Class 1, 5f, 9 runners)
These high quality sprints are so very hard to predict. The margins are so fine. Give me a handicap hurdle over three miles in heavy ground at Kilbeggan instead !!! Stepper Point looks the call after his excellent second to Sole Power in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York. Confidence is tempered a little by the fact that he ran poorly in this race two years ago.
3:40 Moyglare Stud Stakes (Fillies’ Group 1) (2yo, Class 1, 7f, 10 runners)
A great day for Roger Varian yesterday with Kingston Hill’s St Leger win and he can strike here with Cursory Glance who won the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot and then chased home Tiggy Wiggy in the Lowther Stakes at York. Found won her maiden well here and can only improve. She looks the best of Aidan O’Brien’s quartet and the biggest danger.
4:15 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes (Group 1) (2yo, Class 1, 7f, 5 runners)
Gleneagles will be very short in the market to extend his winning run to four. He just seems to be doing enough to win his races so we haven’t, as yet, got a good read on how how good he actually is. A no bet race for me.
4:50 Palmerstown House Estate Irish St. Leger (Group 1) (3yo+, Class 1, 1m 6f, 11 runners)
Try as might I can’t find an angle in to opposing Leading Light. If anything he is getting better since his defeat in last season’s Arc. He followed up his Ascot Gold Cup win with a victory in the St Leger trial here last month and can win the main event today.
SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Tarfasha (2.40 Curragh)
BEXT BEST: Stepper Point (3.10 Curragh)
DOUBLE: Gleneagles (4.15 Curragh) and Leading Light (4.50 Curragh)
