THREE GRADE 1’s IN A ROW: It’s another star-studded day in Ireland with three Grade 1 races in a row at Fairyhouse.
1:00 Bar One Racing Royal Bond Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m, 7 runners)
Willie Mullins has this by the stranglehold with the front two in the BETDAQ market Allez Colombieres and Nichols Canyon. In truth, we don’t know much about either of them. Allez Colombieres especially. He exchanged hands for €300,000 having won a bumper in France and makes his hurdling debut for Willie Mullins today. He is also the choice of Ruby Walsh which explains the market prominence. Walsh was onboard Nichols Canyon when he made a winning debut over hurdles at Cork – but perhaps not as comfortably as his 1/4 price tag indicated he should. The former John Gosden trained runner is partnered by Paul Townend today. Tandem, for Dermot Weld also comes into consideration after an easy win last time out. It’s a tough one for punters as Allez Colombieres looks a little short and with just seven runners the place market isn’t quite so tempting. I’ll go with a place lay of Nichols Canyon.
1:30 Bar One Racing Hatton’s Grace Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f, 6 runners)
A big shake up here with the news that Annie Power is a non runner as she is lame. The mare lost her unbeaten record in the World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival but then bounced back with a comfortable win at short odds in the Mares Champion Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival. Mullins now relies on Zaidpour – a previous dual winner of the race. Zaidpour made all to win the Lismullen Hurdle at Navan last time out in workmanlike fashion and should be spot on for this.
2:05 Bar One Racing Drinmore Novice Chase (Grade 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f, 13 runners)
Certainly the most interesting of the Grade 1’s from a punting perspective. The Tullow Tank won the Royal Bond on this day last year and looked good on his chasing debut here earlier this month when jumping well after a long absence. He’s a dual Grade 1 winner over hurdles and can gain a first Grade 1 over the larger obstacles for the Hughes family.
