AINTREE AND THURLES: Plenty of Irish interest at both courses today. SHAMROCK naps at Thurles but fancies a big race winner at Aintree.
What a very frustrating week (so far).
Monday’s nap, Wedding Present, traded at 1.04 before being collared close home and it was even worse last night at Dundalk when the nap, Behlayan, traded at the basement 1.01 before being caught near the line.
Best chance for the Irish at Aintree today could come in the Grade One Aintree Bowl Chase at 2.30 where Quito De La Roque could be the freshest horse, being one of just two runners that by-passed Cheltenham, which don’t forget was only three weeks ago.
Favourites have a shocking record in this race (1 winner from last 10). My colleague DAQMAN has outlined in detail his reasons for taking on the favourite today Silviniaco Conti and I’m with him on that front. He looks too short and for me there’s still a question mark about the current form of Paul Nicholls.
He was running a blinder before falling in the Gold Cup and no one could say for certain where he would have finished but it was still a fall and not an ideal prep for this.
He’s hovering around evens at the time of writing and it will be interesting to see which way the BETDAQ market will go in the last couple of hours. My guess is he will be odds against.
First Lieutenant and Quito De La Roque are big challengers from Ireland if there are any weaknesses to be exposed with the favourite. Quito De La Roque would have been at the top of the weights in the Grand National – an option that was considered but trainer Colm Murphy preferred this and Quito has winning form here at Aintree and on better ground too – a big factor.
In the opener at Thurles Toner D’Oudairies should outclass his field. He was switched back to hurdles at Cheltenham last time out without success but this looks much easier.
SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Toner D’Oudairies (4.10 Thurles)
WIN AND PLACE: Quito De La Roque (2.30 Aintree)
