THYESTES DAY AT GOWRAN PARK: SHAMROCK looks ahead to the two big races at Gowran Park on Thursday – the Galmoy Hurdle and the Thyestes Chase.
A superb day of midweek action to look forward to this afternoon at Gowran Park.
1.50 John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle (Grade 2)
It’s very hard to look beyond the favourite here Benie Des Dieux who runs so well when fresh and can see off the challenge of Apple’s Jade in a race which should develop into a match between the mares who can’t be split on official ratings (157).
Apple’s Jade seems to have been around for so long that it’s hard to believe she is a year YOUNGER than Benie but Apple’s Jade does have more miles on the clock 26 v 17 races under Rules.
Apple’s Jade bounced back to form with her Leopardstown win in the Frank Ward over Christmas and she was really impressive that day, despite the joint favourite Bacardys not running his race.
Benie Des Dieux would be unbeaten in eight starts but for a highly unlucky fall at the last in the OLBG Mares’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival last year and whilst it seems odd to say this about a nine-year-old – we don’t yet really know how good she is.
3.00 Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase (Grade A)
Massive entries from the Mullins and Elliott yards – even allowing for the fact that Gordon has two non runners. Roaring Bull produced the finish of the season so far (and nearly claimed Gerry Hannon’s voice) when winning at Leopardstown but the 7lb hike looks harsh and so far he has never been able to string two wins together over fences.
A speculative vote goes to Mayhenna who was still competitive before falling at Limerick in a decent contest last time out and providing her jumping stands up might be one of the few that is on the right side of the handicapper.
SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Benie Des Dieux (1.50 Gowran Park)
NEXT BEST: Mayhenna (3.00 Gowran Park)
2020 NAPS: 6/13 +0.57 (to a 1 unit level stake)
