GROUP AND LISTED ACTION: SHAMROCK has bets in the two feature races on the Leopardstown card this evening.
The nap, Sea Of Mystery, was well backed to 2/1 favourite ahead of the opener at Killarney last night but unfortunately was over-hauled in the last 50 yards and finished second.
Killarney continues with an afternoon card but the most interesting racing of the day comes on the level at Leopardstown tonight.
Nine runners go to post for the Group 3 Meld Stakes at 8.00 including the British raider Decorated Knight who was pipped on the line in a Group 3 at Epsom last time out. He should appreciate the better ground tonight and bids for a first win at Group level.
The home challenge is very much headed by Portage who is on for a hat-trick after wins at the Curragh (Listed race) and then the ultra-competitive Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot which he won relatively easily in the end. It was soft ground that day but he seems totally versatile ground wise. Many experts think you need to be a Group level horse to win a race like the Royal Hunt Cup and Portage can prove that theory correct with another win tonight in his first attempt at this grade.
In the Listed Stanerra Stakes at 8.30 Arya Tara might be worth opposing at cramped odds. She has won three in a row under Anastasia O’Brien exploiting what looked a lenient handicap mark but is unproven at this level.
Avenante has run three times at Listed / Group level without success but this looks a softer Listed race than usual.
