SHAMROCK AT TIPPERARY: There’s a mixed card at Tipperary this evening with the first of seven races underway at 5.35.
No surprise to see the Aidan O’Brien trained debutant Battle Of Marathon topping the market for the opener. O’Brien won the race last year with 1/10 chance Fountain Of Youth, although that one had already had the benefit of a run.
Battle Of Marathon ought to be good enough to go in first time. He has a whole stack of good entries including the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes and the son of War Front actually makes some appeal at 2.52 on BETDAQ.
Puck Fair brings the benefit of experience and a creditable debut effort at Naas when finishing fourth to Coto who was only fourth of five in a Listed race subsequently. Although Puck Fair was a close fourth – she did rear up in the stalls and only kept on at the same pace in the closing stages. In short, it would be disappointing for connections of Battle Of Marathon if he wasn’t good enough to beat her, even on debut.
In the maiden hurdle at 7.45 Erlkonig can build on the promise of an excellent first start in Ireland when second to Queen Alphabet at Kibeggan. Formerly trained in Germany he had winning form on the flat there at Hannover and this looks a realistic opening over timber.
