GOLDEN DAY FOR O’BRIEN: SHAMROCK looks ahead to Gold Cup Day at Royal Ascot with another success in the big race very much on the cards for Aidan O’Brien.
Gold Cup Day at Royal Ascot and England playing Wales. I’m not sure there could ever be a more appropriate winner of the Gold Cup than Order Of St George !!!
And it looks a very likely scenario. Order Of St George looks an absolute natural for this race and can extend the exceptional record that Aidan O’Brien has in the feature.
Yeats won it for a sensational four consecutive years but since then O’Brien has also won it with Fame And Glory in 2011 and Leading Light in 2014.
Order Of St George is stepping up in trip – but that goes for most of them over this rare 2m 4f trip for flat horses. Certainly there’s been every indication that he’ll handle the trip with aplomb. He showed no signs of stopping at the Curragh when winning the Irish St Leger by 11 lengths and was also staying on well over the same trip at Leopardstown last time out when winning the Saval Beg Stakes which just as much ease.
He’s comfortably clear on official ratings and may be chased home by fellow Irish raider Max Dynamite who loves the big day razzmatazz – he was second in the Melbourne Cup last season and although disappointing at Sandown last time out – that run should have put him spot on for today.
