DJAKADAM ON SATURDAY: Gold Cup favourite Djakadam is set to contest the feature race at Cheltenham on Saturday as Willie Mullins bids another raid on the top English race of the weekend.
Two from two at Ascot on Saturday and Willie Mullins is expected to send Gold Cup favourite Djakadam across the Irish Sea for the big race at Cheltenham this Saturday in his dress rehearsal for the big one in March.
Djakadam is currently 4.9 on BETDAQ for the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup and his opponents this weekend could include Many Clouds and Smad Place who were 1-2 in Saturday’s race a year ago.
Djakadam found only Coneygree too good in the Cheltenham Gold Cup last season and was hugely impressive last time out when winning the John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase.
Irish racecourse attendances fell slightly last year and the weather has been blamed. The total number of racegoers in Ireland was down by 0.7 per cent from 1.29m to 1.28m in 2015, despite there being four extra fixtures.
The average attendance fell by 1.8 per cent from 3,704 to 3,636.
Better news on prize money front – Horse Racing Ireland is to increase prize-money by €3.1m this year from €53.4m to €56.7m.
