SPRINTER OPENS THE DOOR: Whilst the withdrawal of Sprinter Sacre has robbed the Festival of its current star, the door has been opened on the Champion Chase – the feature race on Wednesday.
Disappointing news that Sprinter Sacre will not be running in the Champion Chase and has now officially been withdrawn.
He was arguably the biggest star set to appear at Prestbury Park although Hurricane Fly, Big Buck’s and Quevega may still have a say in that matter.
Sprinter Sacre was dramatically pulled up at Kempton on December 27, where he was quickly diagnosed as suffering from an irregular heartbeat.
That problem righted itself, and he has since been closely monitored by equine specialist Celia Marr.
However, the eight-year-old did not show his usual brilliance in a piece of work on Saturday, after which he was withdrawn and will also miss the rest of the season.
Henderson told BBC Radio 5 Live: “He’s such a brilliant horse, you can just tell (he wasn’t right).”
“He was working to 90 per cent of his ability and his capacity.”
Hopefully we’ll see Sprinter Sacre back on the racecourse next season, but you do have to wonder whether he might be now retired.
His defection has certainly opened up the market on BETDAQ. Sire De Grugy who has been in irresistible form this season is now the favourite at around 3 with Irish raiders Arvika Ligeonniere and Benefficient also prominent in the market.
The mover though is Captain Conan – stablemate of Sprinter Sacre.
