GALWAY PLATE DAY: SHAMROCK looks ahead to the big one on day three of the Galway Festival – the Galway Plate at 5.35pm.
A typically competitive renewal of the Galway Plate with 24 runners including last year’s winner Lord Scoundrel who is 11lb higher in the weights and was last seen when finishing last of the finishers in the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse.
A Toi Phil, like Lord Scoundrel, represents Gordon Elliott and is my idea of a win and place bet on BETDAQ.
The seven-year-old rarely runs a poor race and has plenty of class too as he showed when winning the Florida Pearl Novice Chase at Punchestown last season and this year a valuable, big field, Leopardstown handicap and the Grade 2 Webster Cup Chase at Navan which was run on heavy ground.
The more rain the better for A Toi Phil who doesn’t look harshly treated by the handicapper.
Sandymount Duke is in great form and won the trial for this at Down Royal. It was only a narrow win however and he has taken a further 3lb hike up the weights which might stop his run.
DAQMAN puts in a good word for Slowmotion and I agree she should run well. The mare loves give in the ground and the stable are in good form and could yet champion the week.
SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP (WIN AND PLACE) A Toi Phil (5.35 Galway)
