KERRY NATIONAL: SHAMROCK looks ahead to the featured Kerry National at the Listowel Festival today. The big race is due off at 4.05pm.
One prediction I’m certain WILL be right today is that the Guinness Kerry National Handicap Chase will be a slog. It’s the fifth race on a card where the ground is already heavy.
My starting point for this year’s renewal was to try and find a light weight who goes well in the mud.
I got as far down as 17 on the racecard before pausing at Arkwrisht who is one of three Joseph O’Brien trained runners in the race – all of whom have solid credentials.
Arkwrisht isn’t the first string (he wears the red Gigginstown cap) but should relish the ground and comes into this on the back of an easy 11 length success at Kilbeggan.
His jumping isn’t always foot perfect and he lacks the experience of many here but I do think he is well handicapped and two of his three career wins have come on bottomless ground – one of which came over 2m 6f at Clonmel so I’m hoping stamina won’t be lacking either.
Elsewhere on the mixed card the Willie Mullins trained Riven Light should prove hard to beat in the Listed race after relishing the soft ground at Tipperary last time out.
SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP (WIN AND PLACE): Arkwrisht (4.05 Listowel)
NEXT BEST: Riven Light (3.05 Listowel)
