LEOPARDSTOWN LISTED RACE NAP: SHAMROCK looks ahead to the Listed Noblesse Stakes at Leopardstown this afternoon where his nap and only bet of the day runs.
I was due for a knock back on the naps after such a good run and sure enough it came yesterday when Seven Nation Army was a last flight faller whilst contesting the lead in the opener at Fairyhouse.
Having watched the video again several times this morning (and trying not to let the pocket talk) I think he could well have been beaten anyway as the eventual winner Be The Hero was re-challenging and appeared to be going just the stronger.
Leopardstown are back in action today with a seven race card on soft ground which gets underway at 3.25pm.
Feature race is the Irish Stallion Farms E.B.F. Noblesse Stakes at 4.30pm for which 11 fillies go to post.
Dermot Weld has made a strong start to the new season and I very much want to be with his Zannda here. She was a Group 3 winner over this trip at Cork last season and followed up that effort by dropping back in trip to 1m 2f here to land the Listed Trigo Stakes.
On a literal reading of the formbook the Jim Bolger trained Altesse would beat Zannda easily today. There was only a head between them at Cork and Altesse is now a full 15lb better off at today’s weights. However to temper that, Altesse has proved hard to win with and the Weld stable has made a much more solid start to the new season.
The Aidan O’Brien trained Fluff made a winning debut in grand style at Navan last season and then finished a creditable fifth in a Group 3 over a mile at the Curragh on the opening day of this season. She will improve for this step up in distance and holds a race fit edge over her rivals.
An intriguing race but preference has to be for Zannda.
