EARLY DAYS IN THE TRAINERS CHAMPIONSHIP: SHAMROCK NAPS a Gordon Elliott trained runner at Punchestown this afternoon to increase the trainers early lead over Willie Mullins.
Plenty has been made today of the support of Willie Mullins to defend his trainers championship – but the markets just seem to be correcting themselves as a result of an initial over-reaction to the Gigginstown news.
Even if Mullins is down a bit on quantity – the quality is very much still there and it’s prize money that the trainers championship is settled on.
It should be an intriguing battle though and Gordon Elliott is ahead in the early skirmishes.
He can add to his tally at Punchestown this afternoon with Fire In His Eyes at 3.20pm.
He impressed when winning a Wexford bumper last season by 18 lengths but could never really get on terms here on his hurdling debut in April. He finished a well beaten fifth to Koshari but the step up in trip today should very much be in his favour.
His main rival is likely to be Bosco Di Alco who won a bumper at Down Royal.
