SOLID START FOR SHAMROCK: SHAMROCK started Royal Ascot with his nose in front thanks to SOLE POWER (WON 5/1) his next best bet of the day. Now for the Irish challenge on day two of the meeting.

Just the one winner from four bets on opening day but it still proved profitable for followers of SHAMROCK.

Sole Power repeated his success of 12 months ago in the King’s Stand Stakes and was even more impressive. With the action seemingly developing on the stands side he was almost overlooked on the far side but had plenty in hand at the line after his last to first ride.

Winning trainer Eddie Lynam said after the win: “He was the best horse in the race, experience has won him it. This horse has been lucky because he’s never had a well-known trainer but he’s always had a top-class jockey. That was his 17th run in a Group One and he’ll have his 18th on Saturday (in the Diamond Jubilee).”

2:30 Jersey Stakes (Group 3) (3yo, Class 1, 7f, 23 runners)

There’s a strong Irish challenge in Wednesday’s opener and Aidan O’Brien bids to win the Jersey Stakes for the third time on the bounce. Giovanni Boldini is the pick of his three runners this year and the drying ground should definitely help his chances. He ran his best race, and had a huge pay day when second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita on firm ground and was only beaten 1/2 length by Charlie Appleby’s Outstrip. He was a little bit disappointing earlier in the month when only fifth and a beaten favourite in a Listed race at Naas but the key to the chances of a better run today lie with the better ground and he is a very solid place proposition for me at around 5 on the BETDAQ place market.

3:05 Queen Mary Stakes (Fillies’ Group 2) (2yo, Class 1, 5f, 22 runners)

Eddie Lynam struck in style with Sole Power yesterday and he has an excellent chance of claiming this with Anthem Alexander who has caught the eye of many good judges. She made a satisfactory enough debut at the Curragh but it was her performance last time out that really put her in the picture for the Group 2. She absolutely bolted home by seven lengths at Tipperary over this 5f trip. Tiggy Wiggy was impressive at Sandown when winning the National Stakes and is one of the home dangers but it was really testing at Sandown that night and it remains to be seen if she can be equally as effective here.

3:45 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (British Champions Series) (Group 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 1m 2f, 8 runners)

It’s a brave man who looks beyond the French superstar Treve here. Whether she has now gone a little short in the market though is a pertinent point. It’s her first race outside of France and although she made a winning debut on ‘good’ ground at Longchamp – it’s likely to be faster ground than she has ever experienced this afternoon. The Irish challenge comes from Magician and Parish Hall who were split by just a neck at the Curragh earlier in the season in the Mooresbridge Stakes. I struggle to see Magician winning – but at 1.8 a place is the nap of the day.

4:25 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes (Formerly The Windsor Forest Stakes) (Fillies’ Group 2) (Str) (4yo+, Class 1, 1m, 14 runners)

Another strong Irish hope – this time with the Johnny Murtagh trained Purr Along who won the Lanwades Stud Stakes at the Curragh at 20/1 on her first start for the stable. It was soft ground that day but she has bits and pieces of form on a firmer surface and is again recommended on the place market.

5:00 Royal Hunt Cup (Heritage Handicap) (Str) (3yo+, Class 2, 1m, 28 runners)

Can’t see Regulation winning this for Mick Halford and if you ask me what I think will win it….. PASS.

5:35 Sandringham Handicap (Fillies’ Listed) (Str) (3yo, Class 1, 1m, 24 runners)

Odisseia has run well all season and won a Navan handicap last time out. It’s a huge step-up in class for the Eddie Lynman trained filly but I will support her, again in the place market. It’s one of those days when I’m happy to take shorter prices on the place bets and have a couple more chances of collecting.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
PLACE NAP: Magician (3.45 Royal Ascot)
NEXT BEST: Anthem Alexander (3.05 Royal Ascot)
PLACE: Giovanni Boldini (2.30 Royal Ascot)
PLACE: Purr Along (4.25 Royal Ascot)
PLACE: Odisseia (5.35 Royal Ascot)
