I have been betting now for quiet some time and on the odd, very odd occasion, you get a day in your punting life that will live long in the memory and last Saturday is now on that short list.

Hats off and applause is due to the legendary “old man” of the chasing world in Kauto Star, who managed to win the big race from Haydock at the grand old age of eleven, seeing off young pretender Long Run relatively comfortably and making his career earnings over two and a quarter million pounds (£2,272,891 to be exact). The reception he received from the crowd was just amazing, and the fact that I cheered him home as loudly as I could despite having a big bet on the runner up shows you a) that I have finally lost it or b) that we fall in love with our winter stars and get all emotional – answers on a postcard please lol?

Naturally, the above paragraph is also to cover my blushes having had a three point win bet on Long Run but what can you do sometimes. He was weak in the market and I lumped on at 2.3 almost emptying my BETDAQ account in the process (OK, that’s an exaggeration but it felt like that), when I expected odds on. I didn’t win but the drift in the betting suggests the favourite may well have needed the race, and I am sure I will get my money back at some time later in the season.

I did have one other bet on the gee gees when sheep like I joined in the wholesale gamble on Dan Breen who was backed down to 7/2 in a very competitive handicap chase at Ascot.

I managed to get on with BETDAQ at odds of 6.0 when I saw the way the odds were moving and this time I used my tiny brain and got out with a profit. Laying off at 4.8 I felt like a bit of a chicken but it worked as he was well beaten by his stable mate (how often does that happen?), leaving me to collect a profit on the race regardless so thank you BETDAQ for that little opportunity!

Once again football rode to my rescue last weekend and a profitable time was had by all as my stakes increase week on week and the money fills up the account. I did have a chunk on Manchester City and Newcastle to draw at BETDAQ odds of 6.0 but that was always speculative and my fate was soon sealed with two goals in the first half by the home team rather leaving me clutching at straws! What will be will be but Everton (1.8 with BETDAQ) and Arsenal (1.7 with BETDAQ) both won to land a three point double as did Crawley (two points at 2.0 BETDAQ), leaving my weekly tally at over five points up so I can only hope you all followed me in and made enough for a take way or two Saturday night?

Looking ahead it’s always difficult with the racing a couple of days in advance but once again I will refer back to my notes from a Nicky Henderson interview of a month or so ago.  Although Long Run was the centre of attention, it appears the master trainer was also more than pleased with the well being of ex Champion hurdler Binocular who runs at Newcastle Saturday in the Fighting Fifth due off at 2.20. He is allegedly jumping out of his skin at home on the gallops and with Overturn in the field to hopefully make sure the race is run at a good pace, he should be able to use his turn of foot to great effect and I am sure we will be able to snap up a little 2.0 with BETDAQ Saturday morning if we ask very nicely!

Newbury put on the Hennessy Gold Cup at 3.10 on Saturday and I would love to have a really strong opinion but suspect I will wait for Daqman’s sage words of advice. There has been plenty of money all week for Wayward Prince which is interesting, but I prefer the chances of Wymott who will hopefully be allowed to bowl along in front (seemed to sulk last time out at Cheltenham when restrained) but his odds are not as generous as I hoped so I will settle for a small bet this week.

Football are next on my list and once again a small double could pay off with the lower division given a bit more airtime this week. Southampton look good value at about Evens to win at relegation threatened Bristol City and that price looks like amazing value to me, while I can see no reason in the world why Cardiff are odds against at home to Nottingham Forest and I will happily steal some BETDAQ odds around the 2.2 mark which seems very generous.

For one last novelty bet for the week how about a boxing double tonight when the odds on Anthony Crolla should comfortably beat Willie Limond with the minimum of fuss and is priced at about 1.28 to do so, but at least he builds up the stake. Add the unbeaten but stepping up in class Tony Owen (2.6 BETDAQ) who may be able to make his fitness edge tell against favourite Ben Murphy who defends his Southern Area Lightweight Title live on British Eurosport and a small bet could pay dividends though as we all know, in boxing all things are possible!

This weeks selections:
3pts Win BINOCULAR 2.20 Newcastle Saturday (2.0 BETDAQ)
1pt Win WYMOTT 3.10 Newbury Saturday (8.2 BETDAQ)
2pts Win double SOUTHAMPTON to beat Bristol City (2.0 BETDAQ) and CARDIFF to beat Nottingham Forest (2.2 BETDAQ)
1pt Win double ANTHONY CROLLA to beat Willie Limond (1.28 BETDAQ) and TONY OWEN to beat Ben Murphy (2.7 BETDAQ)
