Sometimes I am absolutely convinced there is something called “Punters Law”, because every time I come on here bragging about my winnings it all goes pear shaped leaving me eating huge portions of humble pie as the betting Gods put me firmly in my place!
Last week was one of those that need to be forgotten as soon as possible as I struggled to put a foot right with either horses or football, though the odd bet did come to my rescue leaving my BETDAQ account wounded, but nowhere near to critical as I never take that much risk.
Saturday has always been the best racing day of the week and lately it seems to have taken on even more significance though I am sure someone can explain to me how Empire Levant got beaten at Newbury because I still can’t work it out? I admit, I did have a smallish bet on him at odds of 2.2 with BETDAQ when he sluiced up on the Thursday but (you guessed it), I had a chunk more at what looked a pretty generous 3.3 (those BETDAQ layers clearly know a lot more than I do), as he reappeared off exactly the same handicap mark without even a penalty to shoulder. Proverbial “good things” do not come along that often so in I went, but history will show he was well beaten by his stablemate Rock On Ruby and the layers laughed while us backers squirmed in our seats. Naturally, common sense kicked in and I “changed sides” for the next race after deciding Big Bucks was worth laying at silly odds of 1.2 or less on his first run of the season. This time my fellow BETDAQ backers had the last laugh as he sauntered home pulling a cart and looks as if he could be even better than last year, which will take some doing. Little damage was done at that price and I decided to spend the rest of the day laying anything odds on to see what happened. Naturally, it all turned in to some kind of farce as Malt Master (1.7 BETDAQ) and Half A Sixpence (1.7 BETDAQ as well) were the only horses I laid and both of the so and so’s won! By Sunday I had given up on that idea and had a day off but there is enough in my account to go racing next week, which is all that really matters.
Onwards and upwards has always been my motto so I will be watching the live football on Saturday with Leeds taking on Millwall in what looks like a home banker to me. You never know what you will get with Millwall these days but at home Leeds are slowly becoming a force to reckon with once again, and at odds of 2.2 I cannot resist making them my first bet of the weekend. Fifteen minutes later Newcastle kick off at home to a Chelsea seemingly in meltdown (well, in comparison to expectations anyway), and the home teams odds of 4.2 with BETDAQ may not be prefect but they are out of line and at least represent some value. My local publican is in to his football as well so a trip with the I-pad may be in order Saturday evening for Aston Villa v Manchester United, where I will consider some kind of in play bet once I see the starting line ups as the away team odds are too skinny for my liking, though I will add them to my little accumulator which has to come off one day lol?
Moving on to the gee gees, and Sandown put on the Tingle Creek on Saturday, named after the great chaser from the seventies who loved it round here, and was ridden by the now retired Steve Smith-Eccles, who I was lucky enough to meet at the races the other day, and still looks as fit as a butchers dog! If there is a horse anywhere near to that class in this year’s field then surely Sizing Europe has to be the one with the majority of his market rivals looking much better suited to further than this two miles? Kauto Stone could well be a talking horse and has raced over two and a quarter miles or further all his French career, while Wishful Thinking (two miles five furlongs), is another who may find things happening a bit too quickly for him in this class over this trip. According to the handicapper the favourite has upwards of eight pounds in hand of all of his rivals and at BETDAQ odds around the 2.85 mark, I cannot resist putting my money where my oversized mouth is yet again.
Finally IF Sprinter Scare heads for the novice chase on Saturday at 1.55 then a couple of points could be worth the risk. At this early stage he is declared as is Al Ferof who was impressive on his fencing debut at Cheltenham, but I have read a zillion times how highly Nicky Henderson rates this five year old who is expected to go to then very top over the larger obstacles and today could be the day to steal a better price.
