As I consider myself more of an expert on the horses than the football, I find it a little embarrassing to sit her once again to write about last week and how my horse bet lost, but two of my three football selections won to give us all a profit on the weekend but it could have all been so very different. My Norwich to beat Chelsea at silly odds bet may encouraged howls of derision at the time, but it wasn’t so far away come the final whistle with 0-0 an honourable if not profitable scoreline. Luckily for me Queens Park Rangers did the business though at 2-1 up I struggled to hold my nerve and not lay the bet back though a third goal soon eased my nerves! Birmingham, as confidently predicted, had a stroll in their 3-0 win over Watford and are joining the elite list of teams I love for purely financial reasons, along with Crawley Town.
Horse racing is best forgotten personally as I went along to Ascot on Saturday complete with I-Pad so I could steal the better odds on BETDAQ (though please don’t tell anyone). I had a suit and tie on for a change so did not suffer the humiliation of being attacked by sticker wielding staff who were there to warn race goers about future dress code, though as public relations exercises go, racing does seem to have an ability to shoot itself in the foot more accurately than any other industry. Running through the card (I feel the need to bet in every race if I am on course, daft as that may be), I can proudly announce I got a considerably better price than SP with BETDAQ on every single selection I made – marvellous! Sadly, they also have to win to put money back in my pocket and that as a rare occurrence on the day, with only the odds on Balder Succes (1.4 with BETDAQ), and an each way bet on Orzare (25 to win 6.8 the place) returning cash to the BETDAQ account, so not successful overall, but a good day out nonetheless.
Looking ahead and this week I thought it was time to have at least a little look at South African racing as they hold one of their biggest meetings of the year from Kenilworth in Cape Town, the J & B Met. The weather over there certainly looks considerably warmer than it is here, and having read a few internet articles, it appears that South African racing is probably stronger than it has ever been, and more than capable of competing with the rest of the World.
Closer to home, and if Paul Nicholls sends Michel Le Bon for the big chase at Doncaster Saturday then the nine year old will carry a little of my money each way. Clearly held in some regard by the stable, he won his novice chase by sixty lengths in November 2009, before injury left him sidelined until his recent return at Newbury. Unsurprisingly, he looked pretty rusty that day before weakening at the business end of the contest, but with that run under his belt and the drop back to three miles today he should run a big race, and at 17.0 the win and
On Sunday it is hard if not impossible to oppose Hurricane Fly in the Irish Champion Hurdle from Leopardstown, though her BETDAQ odds of 1.85 reflect her chances pretty accurately though that won’t put me off having a bet on the day.
Moving along to the football (or “soccer” for any American readers), and although there are plenty of standout bets, value is the tricky thing to find with the heavily odds on sides hardly worth the effort. That said, I have fond plenty I will be betting on starting with Fulham away to my beloved Everton at BETDAQ odds of 4.1. Using my strange logic (well, it works most weeks), the away team banged in five goals last weekend against Newcastle while my poor Toffees are struggling to find the back of the net so at the odds, the balance could well swing in the Londoner’s favour.
Having done us a favour last week I will stick with Birmingham to do the same again away to Sheffield United although this should be a lot closer. The opposition are sitting high up in Division One but the gulf really ought to show, though I am not going over the top as who knows what teams any one will put out for a cup competition?
Lastly, and again assuming the first teams are put on the pitch, I know Crawley have been doing well and look assured of promotion to Division One next season, but taking on Hull away is surely a step too far with the home team looking for promotion to the Premier League? Personally I would like to be proved wrong but head says I won’t be so a decent bet on the home team should reap the dividends this weekend.
