Somehow last week descended in to farce for me with my big bet on Italy to beat Spain one of my daftest yet, but sometimes you just have to put your hand up and apologise. In my defence (your honour!), the Spanish had failed to turn on the style throughout the tournament and looked a tired outfit in their semi final but boy, did they turn on the style when it was needed. Sitting in a pub full of friends who had all backed Spain I felt rather foolish (to put it mildly), and despite sneakily using my iPhone to see if I could use BETDAQ to mitigate my losses via a lay bet on Italy, I ended up having to take my medicine and live to fight another day. Anyone who knows what happened to Ryan Nelson in the golf could let me know – all I can say is there is no record of him actually playing in the tournament so I can only assume he pulled out injured, while Gulf Of Naples showed the signs of a hard race at Ascot when failing despite being the proverbial handicap good thing! Baileys Jubilee did land the place part of our each way bet and I got on at 3.6 the place with BETDAQ so overall it was a damage limitation exercise and we live to fight another day with maybe the tennis next on the list?

Yarmouth put on some half decent racing Thursday afternoon and once again, the benefits of a tablet or smartphone loaded with the BETDAQ app were evident as my internet crashed completely (thanks a lot BT), while I waited to get a bet on to Hasopop in the opener. All the money had come for the Luca Cumani trained Ajmany (sent off at BETDAQ odds of 1.98) but having noted that the yard have managed an abysmal fifteen winners all season without a two year old between them I was happy to go with the form book and at 8.0 with BETDAQ I had to take the favourite on. I cannot honestly say I was all that confident (a half length win at the line left things always in doubt), so I put in a lay bet at much lower odds to see it matched late on and a profit landed. Fact is, if there wasn’t an app and 3G I could not have placed that bet so technology came out on top in the end – as did my betting bank balance, for a change.

Looking ahead I am already getting withdrawal symptoms for some quality football (is it six weeks or so until the new season starts?), but luckily we have Wimbledon and the tennis to keep us occupied. Once again technology means I feel happier betting on live televised events as with the sound down I can have it on my phone or tablet at work or elsewhere, and get in and out of the BETDAQ markets at leisure – happy days indeed. I cannot, in all honesty feign an interest in the sport or any great knowledge either, but a betting opportunity still exists as far as I am concerned and a win bet on the Bryan and Bryan pairing to take the men’s doubles plus Serena Williams to win the ladies Singles and Novak Djokovic looks like a decent enough treble though I have only watched Wimbledon live once when it rained after one game (not one match), and that was it for the day!

As you can tell, footie is never far away from my thoughts and although it is a bit early (with plenty of likely transfer business to be completed), I cannot resist a sneaky peak and a small ante post bet or two ahead of the new season. Naturally, the Champions League will take centre stage as it should and Barcelona are already installed as favourites at BETDAQ odds of 4.1, but with a new manager in place I would prefer more evidence of how the players will react or any change of style before taking that sort of price. I have decided that looking for the winner is probably beyond me so common sense suggests looking for a team who will do better than expected and thus shorten in price so we can get out at a lower price and lock in a profit. BETDAQ odds of 24.0 about PSG (or Paris Saint-Germain to give them their proper name) are just too tempting for a team who are clearly the French equivalent of Manchester City with a similar budget. With Carlo Ancelotti as manager and Leonardo as director of football, they have a formidable management team and add a decent budget and you can see them going a long way once the tournament starts. I doubt they win but unless they get a terrible draw, it would be a major shock (that could involve dismissals) if they fail to get through the group stages, after which I suspect 24.0 will look very generous and we can get out with a nice little profit.

Horse racing is still one of my favourite sports and Sandown put on a quality card this Saturday, headed by the Group One Coral-Eclipse due off at 3.45pm. In the absence of So You Think the race has a wide open look about it and riding arrangements this season at Godolphin make life even more difficult! In the good old days, Frankie got first choice in which case you would assume Farhh was the one to be on, yet Dubai World Cup winner Monterosso will be ridden by Mickael Barzalona, so who knows what that means? With up to ten runners a small each way bet is my idea of the way to go and I wonder if a very small bet at a big price on the Brian Meehan trained Cogito could yet reward? Unbeaten after two runs at Newmarket and here, both over a mile, he was thrown in the deep end in the St James Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot where he finished a staying on eight after a rough old race saw him given no chance after being forced out wide and then baulked when trying to come with his run. Whether he would have been good enough with everything going his way is unclear to be honest but at odds around the 38.0 mark with BETDAQ to win and 9.8 to place, a small bet is worthy of the risk.

This week’s suggested bets (odds correct at the time of writing):

Football:
2pts Win PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN Champions league 2012/13 at BETDAQ odds of 24.0 with the intention of laying at a shorter price after the group stages.

Horse racing:
Half point each way COGITO 3.45pm Sandown Saturday at Win odds of 38.0 and place odds of 9.8 with BETDAQ

Tennis:
2pts Win Treble Bryan/Bryan (Men’s Doubles with BETDAQ) Serena Williams (Ladies Singles 1.55 with BETDAQ) and Novak Djovokic (Men’s Singles 2.0 with BETDAQ) all at Wimbledon.
