The well used phrase “bad day at the office” could well have been written just for me after last week but when you reach the bottom the only way is up – I am certainly a glass is half full kind of person and always looking forward to my next battle with the BETDAQ layers!
Firstly I pick a golfer at odds of 36.0 as I write who proceeds to have a nightmare round I thought only I was capable of and who was then trading in the hundreds by the time this went to press making me look pretty stupid as he failed to make the cut – oops! Arsenal and Liverpool let me down in the football (who would have believed that?), and those losses were only from the bets I suggested here – a drop in the ocean. One bet I did win (though as is always the way, a smaller bet than my losing ones) was on my beloved Everton to beat Manchester United on Monday at odds of 5.2 with BETDAQ (thank you everyone), a silly price when you consider the makeshift defence United had to put together and the way the Toffees finished last season. Wise after the event is never pretty, but it did put something back in to my account and leave me free to wait for York for my racing bets. By now I had downloaded the new Racing Post for I-pad (one month free trial everyone, after that I gather it’s about £25 a month), which was and is pretty interesting as it seems to be the complete paper version without the hassle of ink marks on your hands! York on Wednesday saw me copying their tipsters (I really must remember to think for myself), though I have to say the BETDAQ odds were better than the bookies on each and every occasion. Somehow I still ended with a smile as they ended with six losers from six selections (even I can match or better that!), and I suspect a trip to BETDAQ and DAQMAN would have paid richer dividends – will I ever learn?
Watching Frankel win easily on the old I-Pad was something I will never forget and I know he will have been mentioned a zillion times elsewhere but I do honestly feel privileged to have been around at the same time, and to have seen him in the flesh a few times, and racing will be a poorer place when he retires to stud, presumably at the end of the season. Everything else paled in to insignificance but for the one decent sized win and place bet on Spanish Duke in the lucky last paid dividends as he managed to battle in to fourth despite being badly hampered, and the 4.3 the place on BETDAQ made me smile for the second time in a week – whatever next? I did lose a few on Newfangled who sadly broke down on Thursday afternoon (2.2 on BETDAQ), but these things happen and I only hope she is OK long term, but overall waiting for the races I like (and watching out for the slowly returning to form John Dunlop yard) helped to keep the betting bank intact and we all live to fight another day.
Looking forward I need to start with the football this week (if only because I love it), though after last week I will tread a little carefully until things settle down and the transfer window finally closes and we can see the proper line ups. Although I do like to at least try to be original, I get a horrible feeling that backing both Manchester clubs plus Chelsea to win each week in a treble (obviously not if they are playing each other), could well pay dividends and they will be my starting point this week. Manchester United do look like the weekend bankers at home to Fulham at odds of 1.35 on BETDAQ, but Manchester City provide much better value away at Liverpool. Anfield is hardly a fortress any more (look at last season for example), and after losing 3-0 away to West Bromwich Albion last week they must be facing this game with some serious trepidation. Odds of 2.47 for the away team is too tempting (they play Sunday, by the way), and if we add the odds on Chelsea to beat Newcastle (1.55 with BETDAQ), then we have the making of a 5.17 treble which looks worth having to me.
With golf off the agenda for now (see above lol), I need to look for another sport and this week that seems to lead me back to the old gee gees – or horse racing to the uninitiated. Once again I thank Apple for my I-Pad as I can travel to Goodwood on Saturday and watch/bet on the other races while walking around the paddock (or more likely, the bar). Bets need to be tempered and not beer fuelled to have any chance of success, but I have read on numerous websites that the Peter Chapple-Hyam trained maiden Arbeel has been working well on the Newmarket gallops. When you think about it, what exactly does that even mean, is there really a man hiding behind a tree with a stopwatch and some binoculars, and if there is, how does he know which horse is which and exactly how much weight is in the saddles? I am personally unconvinced but the people do get paid to provide the information so presumably there must be something to it and we will soon find out! Those who like a bigger risk (that would be me then), Pearl Diva represents the same trainer in the 4.00pm at Newmarket when she drops in class from a Group Three to a class three handicap. She is clearly not as good as they once thought but a repeat of her Folkestone form would see her go very close here, and an across the card BETDAQ double is very much the way I may play on the day (with safely singles of course).
Lastly, a small tennis double has leapt to the fore thanks to the US Open and a Men’s and Women’s singles bet to small stakes is worth the laugh. Roger Federer seems to be back to his best or Djokovic is having an off time, but the 3.6 with BETDAQ for the Swiss master looks the value call, while it is hard to see past a back to form Serena Williams (2.2 with BETDAQ) who really has too much power when back to her very best. A small double on the tow gives us at least an interest though I suspect there may be more bets to come once it all kicks off.
This week’s suggested bets (odds correct at the time of writing):
Football
2pts Win Treble Manchester United to beat Fulham Saturday (1.35 with BETDAQ), Chelsea to beat Newcastle Saturday (1.55 with BETDAQ), and Manchester City to beat Liverpool Sunday (2.47 with BETDAQ).
Horse Racing
1pt Win ARBEEL 2.15pm Goodwood Saturday
1pt Win PEARL DIVA 4.00pm Newmarket Saturday
Half Point win double the two.
Tennis – US Open
1pt Win Double Roger Federer to win the Men’s singles (3.6 with BETDAQ) and Serena Williams to win the Women’s singles (2.2 with BETDAQ).
