First things first as my Mother used to say, and can you tell me if I am the only punter who ups his stakes after a bit of a winning run only to see it all go horribly wrong almost immediately afterwards, and all those profits get eaten away until a planned three week holiday in the Caribbean soon becomes a weekend away in a caravan?
Seriously though, the football has been going so well of late and we are ONE result away from landing another accumulator, but hands up all those who saw Norwich beating Arsenal last weekend – no, me neither. A 12.0 accumulator bit the dust as did most of my other bets last week , though we did manage to get a place bet come in on the old horses, though sadly that was more of a damage limitation exercise than a route to riches!
With the retirement of Frankel leaving a gaping hole in the racing world, I wonder if Godolphin hoped the news that they would not be renewing their retainer with a certain Mr Frankie Dettori would slip under the radar? It didn’t and although I really do not know what went wrong (I think he is as good a jockey as ever, but then what do I know), though anyone talking about him being Champion jockey next season will find me happy to take them on – if he didn’t like travelling to the evening meetings much when retained, what chance as a freelance?
To end with, and to really rub salt in to the wound, I have been following some of trainer Tom Keddy’s horses this season, including Piscean (seventeen runs this year, but with wins at 7.2, 8.0, and 22.0 on BETDAQ), Archie Rice (five runs and one win at 19.0 on BETDAQ), and Zip Lock (nine runs and one win at 18.0b on BETDAQ until last Tuesday), so all in all, a pretty profitable method that I had kept to myself.
Imagine my horror at facing my own plain stupidity when I saw the Yarmouth results from yesterday only to notice that Zip Lock had won at industry odds of 40/1 (I am willing to bet I could have got 50.0 on BETDAQ or better), with only one in the market at a bigger price. Gutted is a word bandied about all too often, but I had every right to be though from now on, I will be keeping a better eye on the runners each day, though we all know it is only a matter of time before it all goes horribly wrong again.
As a glass half full type of person, it is time to look at which bets I will be placing this weekend, everyone a winner (well, that’s the plan). As well as those mentioned here I will keep an eye on various tipsters this weekend as well as any market moves (I am yet to be convinced money talks but we will see), so watch this space next week to see if I have retired a rich man (long odds on BETDAQ), or am back for more punishment and lining the layers pockets (heavily odds on with BETDAQ), well we can all dream?
Football will provide the backbone for my main bets once again, though I am yet to decide whether I can forgive Arsenal enough to include them in any accumulator though I suppose at home to Queens Park Rangers they need to be considered? Arsene Wenger seems sure to have made it quite clear that any title aspirations are already disappearing, while tier Champions League loss will not have lightened his mood, and if they can’t get fired up to win this then any serious chance is surely over? 1.4 is better with BETDAQ than elsewhere and will do for starters, but where do we go next with Chelsea playing Manchester United taking both those “regulars” out of the equation?
Manchester City are another team whose players may well have a ringing sound in their ears as they failed to justify their ludicrous salaries in Holland mid week but at 1.3 on BETDAQ they ought to bounce back at home to Swansea, while Spurs look worth adding even though they are away to Southampton, though 1.95 is a bit mean of the BETDAQ layers in my book! Dropping down a division, the 1.85 about Cardiff to see off Burnley at home looks outstanding value on BETDAQ, and if we add Celtic at 1.25 to see off Kilmarnock and Ranger at 1.3 with BETDAQ to beat Clyde and we have a 10.44 accumulator, and I suspect that will do me for now?
Having said that, I cannot see any result other than a bore draw between Stoke and Sunderland who are both struggling to win this season, and I suspect a similar result is more than possible between Leicester and Crystal Palace and a small small double on the two at odds of 3.5 and 4.3 will pay out handsomely if I have it right (which is doubtful).
Despite a good look around the other sports, England are way too short to beat Wales at Rugby League and the 2.2 (best priced with BETDAQ) about Vettel to win the Indian Grand Prix seems too short for me to want to get involved, leaving me to fall back on the horses for my final bet. Any decent two year old will now be compared to Frankel and all the money this week has been for Kingsbarns, allegedly the next big thing from the Ballydoyle stables of Aiden O’Brien. A once raced son of Galileo, he won his maiden by an easy seven lengths at Navan on soft ground, but the form amounts to very little with only the sixth seventh and eighth racing since, and all being well beaten next time out. He must be working well to end up as the only entry (the yard are often mob handed in these sort of contests), but we are backing his potential and at 3.1, he is too short for my liking. Jim Bolger sends the other Irish raider over in Trading Leather who has good form in the book after winning the Group Three Autumn Stakes last time out but I have read almost everywhere that trainer Richard Hannon and jockey Richard Hughes seem very keen on the chances of Van Der Neer who will look to keep his unbeaten record after being supplemented for the race after his jockey recommended him. To me, that is the sort of thing I like to read before having a bet and at BETDAQ odds of 6.8 he may be worth a point in what looks like an intriguing contest, which seems sure to influence the Derby betting for next summer.
