We welcome back THE BETDAQ PUNTER this week in a new format.
He looks back on his punting weekend on BETDAQ on a day-by-day basis – this is followed by his bets of the week….
This week he is recommending bets on the football, rugby union and an old favourite running in the 12.20 at Doncaster on Saturday.
Friday
A strange old week by anybodys standards and lessons learnt the hard way (which seems to be the ONLY way for punter these days), starting on Friday when I had to take the rough with the smooth. Every year I reduce my bets on the British racing and sit awaiting the Breeders’ Cup from America – and every year the European challengers fail to live up to expectations, and leave with a bloody nose – will I never learn?
As a patriot I suppose I see through rose tinted glasses about our jockeys, but after Richard Hughes messed up on board Sky Lantern by sticking to the rail and failing to get anything even resembling a clear run, surely the other jockeys would learn from that mistake? Step forward William Buick, riding the very well backed The Fugue, the subject of my biggest bet of the day after numerous positive comments from connections, and I was already counting my money (I got on at 3.0 on BETDAQ and was feeling pretty pleased with myself when she was sent off at 2.55), but no, it wasn’t to be. Once again a run on the rails came to a grinding halt and once again she was closer at the line than at any other time, but that didn’t help my account balance and I am still fuming now!
Saturday
Jumps racing plus football plus Breeders’ Cup looked like a combination that spelt out BETDAQ profits to me, and after placing my soccer accumulator and singles as per last week, and a quick single (Manchester United at 1.7 with BETDAQ), I sat back and concentrated on the horses. When you feel your luck is out it makes sense to cut back on the bets, if not the stakes, and after my first punt on Chiberta King at 8.8 with BETDAQ went so badly astray (sixth of six), my nerve went!
With Manchester United 1-0 up I got out quickly with a lay bet at 1.4 and took some profit which is better than none, and reduced my stakes on Ile De Re at Ascot as he was backed at all odds down to 4.7 at the off, though my small bet was matched on BETDAQ at 6.2, which was nice. Once again, discretion was the better part of valour and I laid him on BETDAQ at 5.0 before the off, which turned out to be a wise move as he finished a well-beaten eighth. With the football long since gone (down the drain this week), my final two bets were in the Breeders’ Cup, and both disastrous. I backed Starspangledbanner on BETDAQ at 20.0 and after flying out of the stalls I thought I was in with a chance. Naturally, he faded late on to close to a walk to finish tenth, leaving me with Excelebration at 3.3 on BETDAQ to carry the flag. Historically we do well on the turf and this was our top miler (bar Frankel), but on a day when it all went wrong he was a well beaten fourth on ground that my have been too quick for him, and worse still, he never traded at a price I could get out on however hard I tried.
Sunday
I have friends in the newspaper industry and they tell me that some papers and websites use “substitute” tipsters on a Sunday, so with less info around and thirty non runners at Huntingdon for starters, I settled for a bet on Liverpool v Newcastle and nothing else. As I mentioned last week, the 7.2 I “stole” on BETDAQ for a Newcastle win was overpriced, and after Cabaye put them 0-1 up just before half time, I thought I might finally have got one right for half an hour or so (including half time). As an Evertonian I could not bring myself to lay the bet back and sat there hoping it stayed as it was until Suarez scored a sublime equaliser (and I hated writing that), so overall my weekend was a punting disaster – thank goodness for previous profits.
Monday
Sadly, I have a job! But with I-Pad, smart phone and local bookmakers all in easy reach it means I can place a bet and I usually do, but finding the time to sort out sensible selections isn’t so easy, as I am sure most of you will appreciate. With the racing failing to appeal I had a decent bet on West Bromwich Albion to beat Southampton at BETDAQ odds of 1.73 during tea break, and sat down knowing that laying back would be close to impossible (I can only get away with so many toilet breaks!) until closer to kick off. For once, things went in my favour with a comfy 2-0 victory, but has the tide turned for the week I wonder?
Tuesday
I may not be an expert but even I can spot poor quality racing a mile off and I am convinced, rightly or wrongly, that there are more shock results at the lower level. No involvement seemed sensible (Exeter looked too tricky), and with the Champions league back in action in the evening, I had a small accumulator on the likeliest winners! Paris St Germain (1.16 BETDAQ) are already carrying an ante post bet so they were included as were Real Madrid (1.49 BETDAQ), and Manchester City (1.45 BETDAQ) – no massive accumulators at this level for me, just a 2.51 treble. All I can add is thank the lord for small stakes, with two odds on shots letting me (and thousands of others) down – ouch, as another one got away!
Wednesday
With little on the horizon and still smarting from last night’s football I have gone in ante post (so to speak) and had a little lay bet on Manchester City for the Premiership. They seem in disarray to me and I suspect Mancini’s time may soon be up in which case they could struggle despite all their zillions – 3.45 on BETDAQ looked worth of a few quid and at least it can’t all go pear shaped straight away – and yes, I am leaving the Champions League alone after yesterday!
Thursday
A nice quiet day for me as I make my plans for the weekend (see below), and although I am not naturally organised, I do at least try to take my punting on BETDAQ seriously! With all the football over the weekend (too many games to bother counting), and the racing failing to excite me today, I have sat down to find all the winners for Saturday and after last week, boy do I need some.
Conclusions:
Bet of the week – West Bromwich Albion to beat Southampton, easy cash and a big thank you to the BETDAQ layers!
Disaster of the week – Excelebration, how could he run so badly in the Breeder’s Cup when you consider his form with Frankel?
THIS WEEKEND…..
Looking ahead to the weekend I will never give up on my football bets and although there have been a couple of bad weeks (and I am expecting a Christmas card from the BETDAQ layers who must be rolling in MY money), we had some good weeks too, so it can be done.
This weekend I have another little accumulator to bring in to play, starting with Arsenal, who should have too much power for Fulham, though only if the real Gunners turn up on the day. They are blowing a bit hot and cold this season but look menacing on occasions, and I am just hoping Saturday is their day, even at odds of 1.56 on BETDAQ as I write (live odds below).
Manchester United are leaking too many goals by their high standards but should still be way too strong for Aston Villa at odd of 1.6, and I am pretty sure Chelsea are over priced at 2.1 on BETDAQ to see off Liverpool on Sunday. Add in the real value call of Crystal Palace to win at Peterborough (top v third from bottom) at BETDAQ odds of 2.5, and maybe that will do this week at combined odds of 13.1, which seems worthy of a small bet.
This week I also fancy a few overpriced singles (we only need one to come off to be in profit), so here we go with Swansea first on my list, away at Southampton. The Welsh side still play attractive football and can still rip teams apart given space, and at 3.1 for the away win, a point has their name on it as far as I am concerned. Add Queens Park Rangers away at BETDAQ odds of 4.7 to see off a struggling Stoke for me, as surely Mark Hughes (right) can eventually get what looks like a good squad to play well together, and Spurs at 6.1 to win away at Manchester City (I am just not convinced the Champions are enjoying their football any more), and one winner will do – so fingers crossed!
Elsewhere, we have a weekend of International Rugby Union action worth taking note of, and a short priced accumulator could be the way forward again. The England and Scotland matches see silly odds so I will let them go unbacked, but a win four-fold on Italy to beat Tonga (BETDAQ odds of 1.33), Wales to beat Argentina (BETDAQ odds of 1.28), South Africa to beat Ireland (BETDAQ odds of 1.6), and finally (this is the dodgy one), Australia to beat France at BETDAQ odds of 2.7 could pay handsomely as they all add up to a 7.35 accumulator which I think is well worth the risk.
Lastly, I can never leave the horses alone and as I have followed the eleven-year-old Jake The Snake since he was a juvenile, I have to back him again on Saturday. He returns to action in the 12.20pm at Doncaster, and as he probably has more experience than most of the jockeys in this apprentice race, he should be a safe win and place conveyance. His career record of 56 races and eleven wins isn’t too bad, even if most have been in claiming or selling company. He has won off of a handicap rating of 84 yet is only rated 69 today, we are not asking him to do anything he hasn’t already done in the past.
