THE BETDAQ PUNTER is back – and was in profit with his recommendations last week which included Rosie’s Lady at Wolverhampton and a winning four-timer on the NFL.

The NFL bet landed a 5.14 winner on BETDAQ.

He returns this week with bets on the football and NFL.

May 2013 go on for ever – if it continues as it started that is!

Friday

The just before the weekend day usually throws me, but this week I took a day off and went for a long weekend including Monday – how outrageous can you get? A weekend of punting was the plan so off I trundled to Lingfield where the going was more bog like than plain old heavy. Not a single winning favourite meant it was pretty tough on the punters but as I found the bar (out of the wind and no one seemed to mind me using my tablet), the damage was limited if only because I missed some of their races to bet elsewhere. Ballygarvey at 3.5 on BETDAQ was a Surrey positive, as was Sir Boss win and place at Wolverhampton (12.5 and 3.6 respectively, but third reaped dividends), though I doubt they made up for a) the stupid price of a drink on course or b) Maringo Bay (1.5) I’m Fraam Govan (1.55) and Tradewinds (2.3) all losing in Surrey – so much for my “good thing” treble.

Saturday

The biggest and best day of the week for me and millions of others used to start with the Morning Line but I am still not sure about the new line up and inclined to give it a miss – how fickle does that make me I wonder? Using my own (limited) knowledge, I decided three horses in singles, doubles and a treble would be my one racing bet, and thanks to my constant nosiness on the internet, I remembered reading somewhere that the Rebecca Cutis yard had paid a fortune for O’Faolain’s Boy (4.7 BETDAQ), so there was horse number one. Next up saw me failing to even look at jockey bookings before adding Golden Hoof from the Henderson yard at Sandown (23.0 BETDAQ price!) and finally Gevrey Chambertin at Wincanton for David Pipe (2.0 on BETDAQ was the best I could find). No great surprise when my outsider finished stone cold last (you have to laugh), but the other two came home in first place leaving me with a small profit and dreams of what could have been, if only the third horse had upset the form book. Football was annoying yet again – I still cannot work out how Wigan failed to beat Bournemouth, nor how Crystal Palace failed to score against Stoke after having the majority of the play and the chances, while Reading rubbed salt in to the wound by winning comfortably leaving me ONE winner in my doubles and a treble – ouch.

Sunday

Always a let down to be honest – other than any football, the racing is invariably poor quality and best left alone, and I don’t understand rugby, leaving me rather short of options. A Suarez first goalscorer bet in the Mansfield v Liverpool game was all I could come up with and even that went wrong, but I did have my American football bet placed on Saturday to keep an eye on. They were all odds on and there was little to no inspiration or perspiration involved, but they did all win and gave me some decent money to go to war with on Monday on the all-weather.

Monday

Wolverhampton offer free admission in January so I went with my mate to make the most of it as his racing club had a runner in one of the handicaps, so at least I had company. Rosie’s Lady was apparently strongly fancied to win the 3.50pm so I sat quietly in the bar with her owners like a professional punter (normally I would have a bet in every race), waiting to plunge and make my fortune. Odds on overnight had me worried but she took a bit of a walk in the market just before race time and I got on at 2.3 on BETDAQ (there is a good wireless signal at the track!), and went out to cheer her home. Being the pessimist that I am, I saw all sorts of trouble at first before she burst clear of the pack, then I spotted challengers flying out of the pack before she scored eased down by four lengths or so – oh me of little faith. Standing alone in the crowd as the Postracing owners had a glass of bubbly and a sandwich I didn’t really care as my BETDAQ price was better than the 5/4 they had all taken – happy days indeed all round, though it was a long journey home from the Midlands

Tuesday

Hangovers and betting don’t mix that well as I soon discovered (add work to the mix and it gets a lot worse), but I had no choice as Rosie’s Lady was running again in the lucky last at Wolverhampton! I had been warned that the drop back in trip was not a bonus and that two races in two days can be pushing it but she didn’t owe me anything after a great day out, so how could I resist? Fact is I wish I had now (20/20 hindsight is a wonderful thing), and even the evens I got on BETDAQ (sorry, 2.0) was no consolation as she trailed in a well beaten eight but lives to fight another day.

Wednesday

For reasons unknown I avoided the odds on shots today (typical, there were plenty of winners), and focused on the jumps at Ludlow where I convinced myself the Philip Hobbs trained Tiqris could not get beaten on the opener. Other punters must have agreed with me as he was sent off the 2.85 favourite on BETDAQ, and every other horse bowed to that opinion except for 29.0 shot King Helissio who sprang a shock but more importantly cost me cash! Seven lengths at the line suggests it wasn’t a fluke and I have had enough losers now not to complain too much, but it was enough to stop me having any more bets on the day.

Thursday

One of my odds on favourite days (just lazy I suppose) where I double the stake after a loser – only for fun and starting with very small stakes as always! Sticking to the afternoon I ended up with eight bets, three losers and five winners at BETDAQ odds of 1.75, 1.4, 1.4, 1.45, and 1.6 for a very small profit on the day but far too much stress at my age! With the football failing to excite (I did consider a small bet on Coventry v Preston under 2.5 goals at BETDAQ odds of 2.18 but got distracted), but the weekend is nearly here – what more do I need?

Conclusions:

Bet of the week – AMERICAN FOOTBALL! Despite not having the foggiest idea what I was doing, I ended up with a decent bet on a 5.14 return, touchdown!

Disaster of the week – Not so much a disaster as a shame – in the football Reading did the business at 2.6 which was a giveaway, but failing to find one out of two other results to pull off a double was disappointing

Something for the weekend:
“Normal” football is back on the agenda this weekend after the FA Cup last weekend so I will celebrate with not one but two bets – one on the short prices and one on those with chances at bigger odds. Harry may have bitten off more than even he can chew in attempting to save Queens Park Rangers from the drop, and a rampant Tottenham is the last thing he needs as visitors right now. Fighting for a top four place and beginning to play the way their young manager wants them to, 1.99 is as good as you can get for the Spurs as I write, but good enough for me. With no love lost between Manchester United and Liverpool I see no reason to oppose the home team on Sunday. 2.0 looks overly generous to me as Liverpool continue to flatter to deceive and I am quietly confident we have a winner here. Lastly (no need to be greedy), Hull are on the march to the Premiership and I cannot see Sheffield Wednesday standing in their way this weekend. 1.8 on BETDAQ isn’t brilliant I agree, but it makes up in to a 7.16 return, which is more than good enough for me this week.

For a bigger priced fun bet (nothing more), can I suggest that Southampton are too big at 3.0 to win at Aston Villa, Derby are way overpriced at 4.3 to win at Brighton, and Crawley are in the same boat at 3.6 to win at Tranmere – an unlikely treble I agree but paying out at odds of 46.44 should lady luck be on our side?

With the racing failing to excite me this weekend (nothing jumps out at me I am sorry to say), my only other bet will be another on the old American Football, if only to see if lightning can strike twice after last week? Odds on seems the way forward (well it does when you are as ignorant as I am), leading me to back Denver Broncos (1.3 on BETDAQ) on Saturday, plus San Francisco 49ers (1.75), Atlanta Falcons (1.85), and finally the New England Patriots (1.3), for a possible 5.47 return, though I admit I am not happy going against the Green Bay Packers, if only because I love the name!

This week’s suggested bets (all prices with BETDAQ and correct at the time of writing):

Weekend Football
1pt Win treble:
Tottenham Hotspur (1.99), Manchester United (2.0), and Hull (1.8)

Half point win treble:
Southampton (3.0), Derby (4.3), and Crawley (3.6).

American Football
1pt Win accumulator:
Denver Broncos (1.3 on BETDAQ) on Saturday, plus San Francisco 49ers (1.75), Atlanta Falcons (1.85), and New England Patriots (1.3) Sunday.
