Now for this weekend with bets on the horses, football and basketball.
But first, how did last week fare?

Friday
Apparently that bright yellow thing in the sky is the Sun (what were the odds on that appearing I wonder?), and a few rays of warmth seem to bring a smile to everybody’s face, even me. With dreams of exotic holidays it made good sense to see if the BETDAQ layers would be willing to contribute to my holiday fund starting with the tried and tested “chase the favourites” concept, though in my case I stick to handicaps to make sure of a profitable price. After eight consecutive losers I admit I was beginning to panic, but thank goodness I always start with the smallest of stakes which just about let me hold out until Starlight Air took the 4.00pm at Fontwell by a mere three quarters of a length at odds of 5.3 to get me out of jail (so to speak), and it may be time to think of something new before all my hairs turn grey? In the evening I am always tempted by the French football and tonight saw Montpelier v Lyons, so off I went to check out the odds. 2.25 the home team and 3.25 the away team on BETDAQ implies to me there is little between them other than home advantage so I took a chunk of the 3.25 the draw and sat back to watch (wonderful thing, the internet!). 0-0 always suits me in these situations (no need to worry that way), but to cut it short it was 1-1 in the 93rd minute and I was mentally spending my winnings (again) when up popped an away team winner, scuppering my chances in the blink of an eye, though tomorrow is, as always, another day.
Saturday
Thanks to a pretty understanding partner I drove off to Newbury races to watch a quality card that included a couple of Group races, but only after placing my football bets (all lost), I wish I hadn’t bothered to be honest. Having read, re read, and then read again the interviews with William Haggas I sort of had no choice but to back Rosdhu Queen in the Fred Darling at BETDAQ odds of 2.9 (she was very well backed on the day), but I think she may still be running? Truth is she pulled too hard for her own good before fading in to fourth taking my money with her but there were still three races left for me to make or lose my fortune. Having shouted the abilities of Olympic Glory from the rooftops I had no choice but to back the Hannon three year old even at odds of 1.8 and he duly obliged (thank goodness) to put me in front on the day if not by much. Two more races both saw Sir Henry Cecil maidens backed as if defeat was not an option, but as I felt odds of 2.6 and 3.2 were poor value in 16 and 13 runner races, I retired to the bar ready to fight another day thank you very much.
Sunday
The racing on a Sunday is invariably substandard, so I always focus on the football and today was no exception. Apart from Chelsea to beat Liverpool (lets not even go there, a last minute equaliser by a player who should not have even been on the pitch), I decided to back all the odds on favourites in France (none in England) on the day, and see what happened (well everybody needs a hobby), and see what comes out in the wash? Three bets came up once the layers had decided prices of course, so I had a bet on all of them in singles to see what happened. Two winners at BETDAQ odds of 1.95 (Lille to beat Bastia), and 1.36 (PSG to beat Nice (went my way, but sadly Toulouse failed to see off L’Orient so a profit was made but only a pretty small one!
Monday
The less I know the more I make seems likely to be my epitaph as I declined any racing opportunities and waited patiently for the football in the evening added to the NBA Play offs (surely events with only two possible outcomes must be in my favour)! Manchester United to beat Aston Villa (and thus secure the title), was never going to help with early retirement but was (in my eyes) the proverbial good thing even at odds of 1.3 on BETDAQ and so it transpired, building my stake for a decision on the Basketball – two singles or a win double, sensible or greedy lol? Sadly I went for the boring option only to watch the Chicago Bulls (3.0) and Los Angeles Clippers (1.4) both win for a profit (and a good one), but only £2.40 to a pound as opposed to £4.20 – will I ever make the right decision?
Tuesday
Top trainers time today and this week’s list are D H Brown, Miss Tracy Waggott, S R B Crawford, and Tom George – not exactly household names and taken straight from the hot trainers list! A quick look at the entries for the day left me to back Whisky Bravo in the 4.40pm from Yarmouth and lo and behold, the wisest move of the week so far as he won by a head at BETDAQ odds of 5.8, thank you very much, leaving me enough profit to have a bet on the football. Barcelona have not been playing well of late and looked there for the taking at Bayern Munich but being a coward I decided to lay the Spaniards at odds of 3.7 (leaving the draw on my side), only to see them spanked 4-0, but drawing my profit nonetheless.
Wednesday
Back to the hot trainers list again today and this time we had no less than ten runners to deal with, so let’s hope it works. Long story short and seven losers (ouch) were more than balanced out with winners at 5.8, 4.7, and 8.8 so I really do feel I could be on to something here, especially when the stats point to the smaller trainers so we are not awash with runners? Good news on the horses front was followed by bad news on the football as my soft spot for Real Madrid made me look pretty stupid as they were brushed aside by Dortmund 4-1 which is just a humiliation and perhaps the dawn of a new era in European football? BETDAQ odds of 2.9 looked such great value before the match – and appalling value afterwards of course!
Thursday
I just cannot get excited about the Europa League and am not that convinced the players or managers are either, so I just do not see them as a betting proposition and will focus on horse racing and basketball today. My trainers list (see above) left me with eleven selections (so much for the smaller trainer theory), but after a non-runner and a winner at 10.5 I knew I was in front with six horses yet to run on the evening cards! Sadly, nothing else got anywhere near to bothering the judge, but a decent priced winner is not to be sniffed at, and we can all see how they get on over the weekend (kiss of death anyone)?
Conclusions:
Bet of the week – One bet one winner at 5.8 on BETDAQ Tuesday thanks to my hot trainers system – get in!
Disaster of the week – Liverpool do me once again with a last second equaliser robbing me of my Chelsea win bet.
Something for the weekend:
Not the easiest of weekends to call but we have some hot trainer horses to consider to small stakes, a bit of footie, and some “slam dunking” as well, so something for everyone hopefully (all they have to do is win, of course). Starting with the horses (gulp), we have five sections over the weekend starting on Friday at Perth and Chepstow. Step forward Chartreux in the 4.00pm at Perth for Tom George as well as Back Bob Back in the 5.55pm at Chepstow, while Mister Philson represents SRB Crawford in the 4.35pm at Perth for three options on the day. On Saturday we only have the two options thank goodness when Miss Bossy Boots (3.30pm) and Windforpower (4.40pm) turn out for Tracy Waggott at Ripon, and that’s more than enough risk for my liking on a weekend.
Changing subject I am getting pretty fed up with the way my football bets have unfolded of late so will settle for a simple win single on Manchester United to win at Arsenal at BETDAQ odds around the 3.5 mark. There seems to be an assumption that the league champions will take their foot off the gas with the title now theirs, but I feel that could well be wide of the mark. Firstly Sir Alex never lets them slack, secondly he has a decent transfer war chest for next season so everyone is playing for their places, and most importantly, there is a possibility of breaking Chelsea’s points record which would be an additional prize that I am convinced they will be aiming for.
Lastly, how about a few hoops when the NBA put on a couple of matches Saturday night? Odds on is my guess of the way to play with a quick double on the Atlanta Hawks (1.82) and Oklahoma City Thunder (1.72) – its all so easy (hopefully)!
