THE EDGE: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Monday’s Big Bash League match between Hobart Hurricanes v Perth Scorchers with a recommended BETDAQ bet.

MATCH OVERVIEW:

It’s the week of Christmas, and we have plenty of Big Bash action to enjoy on BETDAQ Betting Exchange! We kick off the week with Hobart Hurricanes taking on Perth Scorchers with very different starts for both sides last week. Hobart Hurricanes got off to a losing start away to the Melbourne Stars, their bowling didn’t go well and they conceded 183/5 to lose by 38 runs. It was a different story for Perth Scorchers however as they won by 38 runs over the Sydney Sixers, while their batting wasn’t overly impressive posting 155/9 their bowling was superb – they had Sydney Sixers all out for 117 and given the Sixers history in the tournament, that was an impressive start.

Perth Scorchers are generally always in the mix for a playoff spot – they don’t have many poor seasons. They were crowned Champions last season, and that was mainly down to some superb bowling. The Scorchers are always well known for their bowling, and while I expect them to get to the playoffs again this season – they could easily have issues with their batting. They have lost Laurie Evans, Phil Salt and Mitch Marsh before the tournament has even started and they simply won’t replace Salt and Marsh. Faf du Plessis comes in, but he’ll be leaving again in January for the new South African T20 league.

On paper, it looks like Hobart could have a good season, however they did get off to a poor start. They have focused their recruitment on players from Pakistan this season which is a gamble. There’s no doubt they are top class, but Pakistan have an ODI series against New Zealand in January so they could easily lose them. I feel like this is a very important game for Hobart because a bad start could see their season go up in flames quickly.

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

We’re in Launceston to start Christmas week, and this is another “out ground” for the Big Bash. We won’t have much ground data from here, but Cricket Australia try to have a game or two so more fans can see Big Bash games. Both sides actually played here last season with Hobart Hurricanes losing to Adelaide Striker and then we had no result between Perth Scorchers and Melbourne starts with bad weather. The first inning scores were 146 all out (chased in 18.4 overs) and 158/6 off 17 overs. I would expect decent batting conditions in general, but obviously we don’t have a huge sample so I’d go into the game with an open mind.

RECOMMENDED BET:

Perth Scorchers usually play better when they have home advantage, but I feel they are worth having a small bet on here at 2.04. I felt they should be trading as the favourites before clicking into the market – I know the Hobart Hurricanes are a lot better than their opening display but with decent batting conditions expect I think the Perth Scorchers bowling will win the game. I wouldn’t really rely on either sides batting line-up, so let’s keep stakes small here.

The Edge Says:
One point win Perth Scorchers to beat Hobart Hurricanes at 2.04 with Betdaq Exchange.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

It’s still too early to be taking on players in my opinion because they are only settling into the tournament. I’d rather focus on finding an edge conditions wise at the moment, but sadly this ground doesn’t have the volume of data to expect a very high scoring game, and whether batting or bowling first is the best option. I do feel both sides aren’t solid with the bat, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a collapse at some stage but the games here last season had decent runs, so conditions might favour the batters. This is definitely a wait and see what happens kind of game!
