ENGLAND v WEST INDIES 3rd Test: Our new cricket tipster The Edge previews the first Cricket World Cup Super League game with England back in action quickly on Thursday as they host Ireland.

The Edge has been a professional cricket trader for over 12 years, and we are delighted to have his columns on BETDAQ Tips. He provides his best bets on a points scale between 1 and 5, with 5 being a rare max bet.

Because we see so much action in-running on cricket, he will also provide some in-running strategies that could develop in-play and lead to some excellent value bets. The Edge covers all forms of cricket: Test Matches, ODI’s and T20’s but his favourite competition is the Indian Premier League each season.

MATCH OVERVIEW:

England are back in action quickly on Thursday as they host Ireland in the first Cricket World Cup Super League game. This competition was designed to give more meaning to each ODI series and while we had a whole summer of fixtures planned around the world, we finally start on Thursday in Southampton.

Of course, England have been in Test Cricket action for the last number of weeks and we will see a totally different squad here. In usual circumstances we would see Ben Stokes, Joe Root, Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer in England XI but the reality is they shouldn’t need them against this Ireland side.

Because of the new protocols, Ireland have been in the UK for a while and have had some warm up games. They scored 296 runs in a warm up game at Southampton against England Lions at the weekend, only to see the Lions chase it down in 34.4 overs only three wickets down. Bowling has been a massive issue for Ireland for a while now, and although their young stars are improving – it’s hard to see any surprises here.

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

All three ODI’s will be staged here so you would have to expect a good pitch heading into the 1st ODI. England like to play attacking cricket and you would imagine they have asked for a decent pitch. A green seamer is Ireland’s only chance of winning – if it becomes a run fest it’s hard to see how Ireland’s bowlers can stop England’s batters.

Going by the Ireland v England Lions warm-up game, we can expect runs. If England bat first you’d have to expect a reasonably big score, and perhaps Ireland can get up towards 260 with Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer missing. Ireland really struggle to get more than 300 in ODI’s, and if they started well that might present a trading opportunity to lay given how weak their tail batting is.

We seen rain at Old Trafford in England’s win over West Indies. However at the time of writing, the weather looks set-fair for a game here!

RECOMMENDED BET:

To be honest, it’s difficult to really recommend a bet here with one massive favourite that you can’t see past. England are 1.14 to win with BETDAQ Exchange. There will be better trading opportunities in-running. We landed our first bet with a confident draw lay on the 3rd Test between England and West Indies. I’m happy to wait for some better trading opportunities in-running on this one, so there will be no official bet. The over-all P&L at the end of each month is what counts.

The Edge Says: No outright bet. Focus on in-running strategy.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

If you were asking me what my ideal scenario would be; it would be Ireland batting first and getting a score close to 300, England losing an early wicket or two and then we have a reasonably close chase. I struggle to see how England lose here – Ireland had everything in their favour when the sides met in Dublin the season before last, England found themselves in a difficult situation but were still able to win after trading odds against.

If England bat first, you’d have to assume a very big score and one way traffic, possibly even 350+ if the sun is out. Ireland’s bowlers just haven’t got the talent to take wickets on a reasonably flat pitch; we have seen this countless times last season. They bowled well on a tough pitch in Stormont in Belfast but they really suffered on good pitches in Malahide and Clontarf against the West Indies and Bangladesh. If Balbirnie and Stirling fail when batting then Ireland have no chance.

With England trading 1.14 from the off, we will need to see things go wrong for England to have a good game for trading – but they get the job done in the end and I would always like to have England on my side if they got up to say 1.6 to 1.8. Ireland’s tail isn’t strong, and their death bowling isn’t strong either – that’s where the best trading opportunities will come from could the situation arise.
