ENGLAND v IRELAND 2nd ODI: Our new cricket tipster The Edge previews the 2nd ODI as Ireland get a chance to quickly bounce back from a very poor display when they take on England on Saturday.

MATCH OVERVIEW:
Ireland get a chance to quickly bounce back from a very poor display when they take on England in the 2nd ODI on Saturday. The 1st ODI was over very quickly with Balbirnie and Stirling out quickly. The only positive for Ireland is that their tail scored some runs which hasn’t been happening over the past year. They needed to, with Ireland 28/5 after 6.3 overs.
While it was a very poor batting display from Ireland, the bowling worries me more. The pitch offered something for the bowlers. Not a huge amount, but the ball did a bit and the pitch was a bit two-paced. Yet England chased down the 173 target is 27.5 overs only four wickets down. If England bat first, you can probably double that score.
On a wider point, while the ODI Super League is a very good thing for ODI cricket – the 1st ODI shown just how tough it’s going to be for sides like Ireland, Netherlands and Zimbabwe going forward. Perhaps they can target their home games for points, but the reality is that they just aren’t good enough to compete with the big boys yet. More worryingly for Ireland, it isn’t even close to England’s best XI.
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
The pitch definitely offered something for the bowlers on Thursday. In all likelihood Ireland will probably concede 350+ runs if they bowled first given the quality of their bowlers, however after seeing the first ODI it feels like their best chance to win is to bowl first. Ireland struggle to get 300+ runs in ODI’s, and when they set 300+ had really good weather in Malahide and Clontarf against the West Indies and Bangladesh it was chased down easily.
The weather has been excellent in England recently and the pitch offered some turn on Thursday, and you would think we will see something in it for the spinners here. That will suit England, but not Ireland as they don’t have a high quality spinner.
Once again, the weather is set fair for a game.
RECOMMENDED BET:
I can’t see England losing here, and with them trading 1.08 there isn’t an edge to be had in pre-off betting here. The 1st ODI was a complete 1.01 train with England taking early wickets, and hopefully we see either Ireland bat really well or England lose early wickets for this to become a good game for trading. Bottom line is Ireland need to improve.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
My ideal in-play scenario would be still the same from the 1st ODI, Ireland bat very well and England lose early wickets. The Ireland death bowling isn’t strong so I would expect England to win from a position of difficultly. The pitch offered some hope on Thursday, and Ireland should probably bowl first.
I realise that they could easily concede a score close to 400, but perhaps if they could take an early wicket or two with the new ball and a two-paced pitch then England could be under pressure. Having said that, it’s even difficult to see Ireland chasing a score of 260. But England only scoring 260 would make the market interesting!
England were 1.14 for the 1st ODI, and are now 1.08 after every seen the Irish standard. It’s going to take a lot to go wrong for England to get this price moving. But if it does, I would be still looking to way spots to back England rather than think Ireland can trade odds on. Ireland traded odds on with England in big trouble the last time the sides met in Ireland, but they still couldn’t get the job done.
