MATCH OVERVIEW:
We have the biggest World Cup game of the tournament so far on Friday! The Australia v England clash has now turned into a knock out game, and there’s bound to be drama on BETDAQ Betting Exchange Friday morning. Australia started the tournament very poorly with a huge loss to New Zealand leaving them in a difficult position net run rate wise – they managed to claw back some of that in their win over Sri Lanka but then the group was blown open by Ireland beating England on Wednesday morning in Melbourne.
We actually have two massive games at the MCG today as Ireland take on Afghanistan in the early game. That game is huge because if Ireland can finish in the top four in this group they qualify for the 2024 World Cup which is probably their sole aim to be honest. They did fantastically well to beat England, but the reality is England just didn’t bat or bowl well enough. They were too relaxed, and when things weren’t going well with the bat they did nothing to change it up. It was like Jos Buttler had a plan but no back up plan. I feel Morgan might have changed up the batting order given the rain was closing in, and it was England’s fault they were 5 runs behind Duckworth Lewis when the rain came – they shouldn’t have been in truth.
Despite some lazy batting, the true problem for England is their bowling. They leaked too many runs to a side like Ireland, and that has been their main issue for a while now. The MCG doesn’t really suit their blockbuster batting because the boundary is so big – there is definitely a lack of sixes here. Although England have their issues, so do Australia – they conceded a huge total to New Zealand in their opening game and although they bullied Sri Lanka earlier in the week, Sri Lanka will always struggle in these conditions. Australia come into the game as marginal favourites, but we have two sides here with massive questions to answer. What a game ahead.
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
It’s fair to say the weather is causing major issues in this tournament now. Although Ireland were on top at the time, it cost England and then we lost the Afghanistan v New Zealand game afterwards too. It’s also put South Africa on the backfoot in the other group too. Once again showers are forecast for Friday, and it’s going to be another day of watching the radar. It’s hard to know what a par score is here given conditions, but from what we have seen of the play we’ve got so far, I would suggest 160 looks competitive. Anything over that will be a difficult chase. It’s amazing teams aren’t watching the radar though and telling their batsmen to speed up etc – England probably would have won on Wednesday with a little more forward thinking.
RECOMMENDED BET:
Whatever way you look at this game, it’s going to be a cracker. So much is on the line too, and so much history between these sides. Both sides actually had their warm-up series between each other and England came out on top in that. Australia’s bowling was pretty loose, and I would suggest there isn’t much between the sides bowling wise. I know England are pretty average in that department, but so are Australia. Where I feel the game can be won is England’s batting. They don’t fail often and although they had an off day against Ireland, I would expect them to bat well here. This game is really 50/50, so I’m happy to take the 2.06 on England to win.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
I have to say this looks like one of the more tricky games for trading. We could have difficult batting conditions, especially with conditions overhead, but at the same time you’d expect the bat to win over the ball given the poor bowling on display. We saw some high scoring games between the sides before the World Cup, and I would favour supporting both sides when batting rather than looking for trades on the bowling side. It’s going to really pay looking at the radar here though – we saw a huge move on Ireland as the rain came on Wednesday and we’re likely to see rain again here.
