BIG BASH: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Friday’s second Big Bash game between between Melbourne Stars v Brisbane Heat with a recommended BETDAQ bet.

The Edge has been a professional cricket trader for over 12 years, and we are delighted to have his columns on BETDAQ Tips. He provides his best bets on a points scale between 1 and 5, with 5 being a rare max bet.

Because we see so much action in-running on cricket, he will also provide some in-running strategies that could develop in-play and lead to some excellent value bets. The Edge covers all forms of cricket: Test Matches, ODI’s and T20’s but his favourite competition is the Indian Premier League each season.

MATCH OVERVIEW:

It’s day two at the Big Bash as we move to the Manuka Oval in Canberra. We’ll have a handful of games here before Christmas and we start with a cracker as Melbourne Stars face Brisbane Heat! It’s fair to say that Melbourne Stars have been the serial bridesmaids of the BBL throughout the years and last year was probably their most disappointing finished after winning the Group section of the tournament! They just can’t seem to win in the Playoffs – they’ve lost eight of them.

They lost Lamichhane to Hobart Hurricanes which will be a big blow, however he tested positive for Covid19 so he’ll likely be out until sometime in January. Jonny Bairstow is in the squad but obviously has England commitments and quarantine issues and that will be a problem for all the sides this season. The Stars might not be as good as last season, but they’ll probably make the Playoffs and lose again; the usual!

I’ll looking forward to seeing how Brisbane Heat perform over their first couple of games as they look particularly poor on paper this season. Their bowling has always been an issues, going back as far as I can remember, and it looks to have got worse on paper this year. Morne Morkel is a boost but with the bowlers they have lost I’m not sure how they stop runs from flowing. They lost AB de Villiers with the bat too. Chris Lynn will lead the charge and he will enjoy Australian conditions after a terrible CPL earlier in the year – he still seemingly can’t play spin.

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

The forecast looks ok at the moment, but make sure to check the radar a couple of hours before the start time. The Manuka Oval isn’t a home ground for any team, so we don’t have a lot of data to go off here. I feel we should see conditions that are good for batting at the start of the tournament – with games coming up thick and fast the groundsmen have little choice but to prepare a wicket that’s good to start with because of the amount of overs it’s going to see.

We had two games here last season with the first innings scores reading; 161/5 and 172/4. Neither were chased but we actually had the first game called off because of smoke – remember the Australian bush fires were very bad! We had a T20 International here recently and India batted first to score 161/7 and won by 11 runs. Australia only managed 150/7. I would aim for 165+ batting first, and I’d also bat first if I won the toss.

RECOMMENDED BET:

I really don’t like the look of Brisbane Heat on paper this season, although I respect the fact that Chris Lynn can win games on his own with his power hitting. He’s likely to come off at some stage throughout the tournament as the Big Bash is usually his best time of the year. That being said, Melbourne Stars have much the better side here and their bowling is a lot stronger than Brisbane Heat. That’s what will win the game and I’m happy with the 1.75. I would stake higher, only for it’s the start of the tournament and I want to see how the teams start and how the new rules go.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

With this being the second game we have the advantage of seeing how the new rules went yesterday. If you didn’t see the game yesterday and aren’t sure what the new rules are for the Big Bash, they are:

• A two over powerplay called after the 10th over by the batting team
• A mid-game substitute
• League table bonus point if ahead of opponents 10 over score, if bowling team are ahead then they get the bonus point

As I said yesterday, adapting quickly to these changes could see a lot a big trading advantage in the early games on BETDAQ Betting Exchange. There’s bound to be plenty of market movement around these new rules and sections of the game.

I would expect more wickets to go with sides chasing the 10 over target – especially with a bonus point on offer. I’d lean towards supporting the side batting first here, however I don’t like the Brisbane bowling so I won’t be supporting their bowlers!
