2nd ODI INDIA v ENGLAND: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Friday’s 2nd ODI between INDIA v ENGLAND with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
MATCH OVERVIEW:
England’s tour of India is turning into an epic affair. After some incredible moments in the Test series, a very close and high quality T20 series, we started the ODI series with an absolute cracker. India batted very well and England needed to chase down their 317/5 – they started the chase superbly and traded down towards 1.15 on BETDAQ Betting Exchange only for India to come roaring back and take a 1-0 lead. The reality for England is they don’t need to change much – they had the game in their hands and threw it away but we see these collapses in Indian conditions time and time again under pressure.
The use of the word pressure is probably wrong too, because England got themselves to 135/0 with Roy and Bairstow flying along only to lose two quick wickets and slow down. They then started to consistently lose wickets and that’s where the pressure kicked in. They didn’t even need to chase a high run rate, they just needed to stay in and bat reasonably well but they couldn’t do that. One wonders what target they could have set if they were batting first as there would probably be less pressure; however I would suggest bowling first was a slightly advantage as this ground looks good for chasing. I know England didn’t win, but they managed to trade 1.15.
Hopefully we get more of the same here and another excellent game. I know I have said this a lot during this tour, but there really isn’t much between the sides. Perhaps India have a more solid look to them in the ODI format, but England fans will say they are World Champions and rightly so. The reality for England is they need their batters to bat longer – they were almost in T20 format which is great when it comes off and then embarrassing when it doesn’t. India don’t need to change much and they will take confidence from the fact they came back to win from a tricky spot.
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
The pitch looked very good for batting on Tuesday and I would expect another reasonably good wicket here. England captain Eoin Morgan said they got a little bit of dew on Tuesday so I would definitely bowl first if given the option at the toss. I think bowling first and chasing will be an advantage. England’s collapse is even more surprising given the dew, but fair play to India. Morgan was also full of praise for his bowlers even though India scored 317 so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a score bigger than that this time around, or at least very close to it. You’d have to suggest more times than not it would be chased too, so perhaps the team batting first needs 350+ which seems a massive task. I’d definitely bowl first as it gives you a lot more ways to win the game.
RECOMMENDED BET:
We landed our bet on India on Tuesday, but really and truly England threw away the game. I felt Archer would be a big loss to England, but in fairness to them they bowled very well. Time and time again this series we have seen there isn’t much between these sides, and if England can bat better than they can win here. I know India are very hard to beat at home in their own conditions in the ODI format, but England look good value to me here at 2.5. India have rightly moved out a little after the very close game on Tuesday, but I would have the sides a little closer together again. I wouldn’t have England odds on, but I think fair value is 2.2 or thereabouts.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
While I tipped England to win above as I feel they offer good value before the off – my main play here will be trading the chasing side. I think the toss is a big factor here, especially with a little bit of dew like Morgan said on Tuesday. In India, you’re never far away from a heavy dew and then chasing is a very big advantage. Bowling will be easier in the first innings too, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see a very big score the way the captains were talking after the 1st ODI. It seems 317 was a little short of par, and England just threw away the game with a collapse. It happens.
The India top order looks rock solid and in great form – I would happily support them whether they bat first or second, while the same can be said about the England top order. They have carried their form right through from the T20 series. The England middle order haven’t had much game time, but I wouldn’t right them off just yet. They have the talent to move the market and I wouldn’t go heavy against them. The main trading angle here in-running is the trades on the team batting second in my opinion.
