SRI LANKA v ENGLAND 2nd TEST: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Friday’s 2nd Test between Sri Lanka v England with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
MATCH OVERVIEW:
After an excellent 1st Test we quickly have the 2nd Test between Sri Lanka and England. Given the Covid19 bio secure bubbles, we stay in Galle which is unusual at this level but interesting nonetheless. It’s likely that two Tests here so quickly together will rule out the draw given it’s tricky to bat here at the best of times. Joe Root didn’t have any issues in the 1st Test however as he played a match winning knock of 228. Although England got 421, more than half came from Root and it really highlights how much they need him.
There’s talk about England “rotating” their seam attack for this Test as they aim to win a fifth away Test (which is no mean feat!) and a sixth in a row in Sri Lanka. Stuart Broad played very well in the 1st Test, and it would be a surprise if they left him out but they could easily swap him for Anderson if they had planned to do so before the series started. The Sri Lankan player were surprised by how well Broad bowled, considering the seam attack wasn’t expected to take many wickets. Unfortunately for England, Moeen Ali still has to be wait before coming back after Covid19.
The scene is set for another excellent Test match. The plan for Sri Lanka seems straightforward – try and get Joe Root early. I feel if they can get Root out early, England will have a problem getting a big score especially as the wicket should offer more turn now.
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
Although we finished the 1st Test early, we actually saw bigger than usual scores for Galle. England managed to score 421 which is an unusually high score for Galle while Sri Lanka managed 359 in their second innings after getting bowled out for 135 in their first. That was where the game was lost, obviously, and batting well first will be absolutely key in this Test as you’d imagine batting conditions will be very difficult as the game goes on. I think everything will depend on the first innings here and I’d definitely want to bat first if I won the toss.
RECOMMENDED BET:
I wouldn’t rule out the draw trading shorter than its current 6.0 at some point but I think conditions will rule out the draw here. The spinners will bowl in excellent conditions and there will be plenty of unplayable deliveries at the Test goes on. That leaves a choice between Sri Lanka and England, and I’m going to give the nod to Sri Lanka at 2.7. I fully take on board England were impressive in the first Test, but I feel they really need Root to score big again. I feel Sri Lanka dealt with their bowlers a lot better in the second innings and they’ll be well placed to perform better in their first innings this time around. I’d have Sri Lanka a little shorter, and England a little bigger, so the home side are the value for me.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
We had some incredible Tests for trading in-running on BETDAQ Betting Exchange recently with the 1st Test here offering plenty of opportunity and the Australia v India Test series having so many swings! With tricky batting conditions we can expect some very big swings in-running here too. I would be very keen to get on the team batting first as I feel that will offer the best advantage. I know Sri Lanka made a poor attempt in the 1st test, but you don’t want to be batting last on this wicket. The team batting first will have an advantage; it’s then over to them to take it or not.
I’d be surprised if England swapped Broad for Anderson, but I’d see that as a negative if they did. I’d leave Broad in the side after he bowled so well – the team news might be worth a few ticks here too and that’s definitely an angle to watch for. The England lower order looks very weak and Buttler won’t be suited to these conditions so I would be very happy to get against the England lower order, and with the openers under big pressure I’d be happy to get away Crawley and Sibley if they play.
