MATCH OVERVIEW:

I’m happy to focus on the first game today as it looks like a cracker! We start the action at the DY Patil in Mumbai as Mumbai Indians take on Rajasthan Royals. This is only the second day game of the tournament, so I would keep a very open mind about conditions here. We saw some very heavy dew on Thursday as Lucknow Super Giants chased down 210/7 from CSK but we aren’t going to have any dew issues here during the day. Mumbai Indians will be happy with that, as they suffered with a big chase at Brabourne too. Delhi Capitals chased down their 177/5 in just 18.2 overs.

This should be an interesting game as Rajasthan Royals really fired in their first game. They put up 210/6 against Sunrisers Hyderabad but obviously that comes with a question mark because of how bad Sunrisers Hyderabad were last season. We didn’t see improvement in their opening game, and let’s not forget that Rajasthan finished second last in the table last season. We’re going to find out a lot more about Rajasthan in this game and it will be nice to see how Mumbai perform too. You’d have to feel that the auction wasn’t that kind to them this time around, and their side definitely look a little weaker than it usually is. A big game to start the day really, a loss for Mumbai who mean a very slow start to the tournament and the pressure is all on them.

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

I’m definitely keep an open mind on batting conditions going into this game. For two big reasons – one, this is the first day game here and we have no records of this ground anyway because it isn’t a usual IPL ground. And two, we’ve had two games here with 205/2 chased down and then 128 scored in the second game and very nearly defended too. Given the range of scores and how we went from high scoring to low scoring it’s hard to say what type of conditions we’ll get here, and then this is new road to cover too with it being a day game. Given the lack of knowledge, you’d probably bowl first if you won the toss.

RECOMMENDED BET:

Mumbai were always going to be favourites for this game. They are the bigger side and people will still feel Rajasthan have a lot to prove after last season. I agree with all that, and the jury is definitely still out on Rajasthan too, however I feel the odds offer some value on Rajasthan here. I would still have Mumbai as favourites, but not as short as 1.81 and I’m very happy to take a chance on Rajasthan at 2.18. The Mumbai bowling doesn’t look as good this season, and I know Delhi had conditions in their favour the other night they took their bowlers to their cleaners. With the Rajasthan batters in good form and starting the tournament with 200+, they can really put the pressure on this Mumbai batting to make up for their bowlers.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

It is a little hard to fully form an in-running strategy here with conditions unknown, however there some angles to play. There was such a big range of scores between the opening two games here I want to see more games before fully forming an opinion on the scoring – I was surprised by the low score in the second game given how easy it looked to bat in the opening game. Obviously dew is always going to play a big part, and a lot of in-running strategy will be focused around dew during this IPL. We saw just how important it was during the game on Thursday. As this is a day game, we don’t need to worry about dew here. I feel the best angle here might be taking on the Mumbai bowling, as it looked weak in their opening game and it looks a little weak on paper too – we can see Rajasthan trade favourites while they bat.
