THE EDGE: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Sunday’s 1st T20 between Australia v England with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
MATCH OVERVIEW:
The T20 World Cup is getting so close on BETDAQ Betting Exchange! Australia and England are putting the final touches to their World Cup preparation, and we should have a very entertaining series. We have had some unusual fixtures around the world in the build-up to the World Cup – including an ODI series at the moment between India and South Africa – but to experience Australian conditions will be a great benefit to England. They are fresh off a 4-3 series win against Pakistan in Pakistan conditions, and while that was a fantastic series we’re going to see very different conditions here and at the World Cup.
While it’s hard to read too much into the results of this series because teams will clearly be using the games for warm-up purposes more than anything, I would expect both sides to be firing. It’s so close to the World Cup after all. Ben Stokes is expected to return to the England set-up which is expected, but still a shame for Ben Duckett who did so well against Pakistan. The vibes are that Harry Brook will definitely keep his place – he was star of the show in Pakistan after all, and it will be interesting to see does Jos Buttler play after picking up an injury for the Pakistan series. Liam Livingstone is also set to return, but whether or not all these players play the full three games remains to be seen.
Australia have started their “home” season with a tour of the West Indies. It’s fair to say West Indies don’t really enjoy Australian conditions, and they only managed 145/9 in their opening game. Australia make a meal of chasing that though, and although they have home conditions I’m not sure we can call them favourites to win the series here.
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
We start the T20 series at Perth Stadium, and this is only the second T20 International here. You have to go back to 2019 for the first T20 here and that was over very quickly as Pakistan were kept down to 106/8. I’m happy to not read too much into that, and then the long gap in International cricket was due to Covid19. In the Big Bash, Australia’s premier T20 competition, we only had one fixture here last season. However, in 2020/21 we saw plenty of games here and it looked an advantage to bat first. I wouldn’t say scoring was too high, but again there has been a gap. It’s hard to say what a par score is but I’d be targeting 175 if I was batting first.
RECOMMENDED BET:
When I clicked into the market here I was surprised to see the odds. I know there isn’t much in it, and it is also likely we see a flip flop a few times in-running it’s only a few ticks, but I do like England here at 1.86. Although they’ve been playing in very different conditions in Pakistan, they put in some very impressive performances. Their big stars should slot back in here too, and I just feel that they are a much stronger side than Australia. I’d have England as decent favourites here ahead of a fascinating series, and the 1.86 is worth backing as a reasonably confident bet.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
Although this isn’t in-running, it’s before the off I would keep an eye on the odds here before we start. We saw in Pakistan that Pakistan started the 1st T20 as 1.7 favourites but then by the seventh T20 England were starting 1.8! I think we’ll see similar movement in the sense that I’d expect to see England going off as stronger favourites in the second and third T20. They have an excellent side for T20, much better than Australia in my opinion, and it will be interesting to see how they go in these conditions. Although we don’t have much to go off at the Perth Stadium, it has looked an advantage in the Big Bash to bat first – I would tilt my in-running trading towards that, but let’s wait and see what conditions are like on the day – there has been a gap here.
