THE EDGE: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Thursday’s early morning 1ST ODI between Australia v England with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
MATCH OVERVIEW:
The T20 World Cup is only over a matter of days, and we’re into an ODI series on BETDAQ Betting Exchange between Australia and England. Of course the show must go on, but when you see series’ like this so quickly after a major tournament you can agree with the players when they say they are burnt out! India quickly travelled to New Zealand for a tour too. England will still be buzzing after landing the World Cup – that meant they currently hold both the ODI and T20 World Cup, and they have a fantastic team. They have changed the way cricket is played with their attacking brand.
For Australia, a heavy defeat to New Zealand in their opening World Cup game meant they were always up against it, and things just didn’t work out for them. We had a “knockout” Group game between Australia and England, but when the rain took that away it was always going to come down to net run rate, and Australia suffered from that opening defeat. Travis Head has returned to the squad, which Pat Cummins will captain in his first ODI series as leader. Australia will be without Glenn Maxwell though which is a huge blow, he broke his leg in a freak accident in his garden.
England will likely rotate a few players around for this series. However, they still have Buttler, Alim Billings, Sam Curran, Rashid and Roy in the squad. It depends on their mood, but some of those might miss an ODI out of the three after a hectic World Cup. Bowling has been an issue for both sides but it’s hard to be too harsh on England given they have just lifted the World Cup!
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
We saw a lot of poor weather during the World Cup, but the weather forecast looks OK for Adelaide this week – at the moment it looks like rain will arrive the weekend. Given the amount of stops in play we had at the World Cup, I’d still keep an eye on the radar here. There was drama at Adelaide at the World Cup because they played on a used pitch for the Semi-Final between India and England, but scoring was good there – England chased down 168/6 in just 16 overs without losing a wicket. Because of Covid19 and the way the schedule worked out, we haven’t had an ODI here since 2019. Usually it’s a “go to” ground for Cricket Australia – in that game we saw India chase down 298/9 from Australia and in general I would expect good scoring conditions. You’d have to be aiming for 300+ batting first.
RECOMMENDED BET:
We saw a very high scoring T20 series between the sides before the World Cup, and that favoured England. They batted first twice and put up good totals. I would be confident on them here if they batted first again, but their bowling does look a little weak on paper. It seems strange to say that after winning a World Cup, but they are also without the likes of Ben Stokes etc. I can understand why Australia are favourites, but I feel they are much too short at 1.68. From a value point of view, I’m very happy with a small bet on England at 2.4 or bigger – I just expect a closer game than those odds suggest, and of course this England batting can power their way to winning any game at the moment.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
I can see the bat winning out over the ball here, so I would mainly look for trades on both batting sides. Despite a possible World Cup hangover, England should go very well with the bat. I would also expect Australia to go well with the bat – you have to say the England attack won’t be at their best here and in general I would be surprised if we didn’t see a high scoring game. I would also keep a keen eye on the team news here because although the squads look strong, we are so close off the back of the World Cup so we could see some players rested either early series or late series.
